No, it's not similar.

There are two OS platforms for desktop/laptop usage: MacOS Windows

These both contain ways to run arbitrary compiled code from an arbitrary source -- like a computer should. Losing this feature of our smartphones should have everyone concerned.

And they're both working towards taking that away.

For now we have Linux as a 3rd option, but that only exists so long as there's hardware available that'll let you run it. Can easily imagine a near-future where you can only get 'Windows hardware' or 'Apple hardware' and nothing modern that'll boot a 3rd-party OS.

Do you have any hypotheses why these high-profile people didn't make the switch?

I guess that many high-profile people are too busy with their regular work to be mindful of politics/ethics and thus they can't be bothered to switch. But maybe there are other reasons as well?

It's no escape from the angry political stuff, it's just a jump from one end of the political spectrum to the other.

Best to just cut down the social media usage. Twitter-style social media isn't a good place to have deep and meaningful discussions of anything.

Shame though, way back before Trump/Brexit and the era of extreme tribalism, Twitter was full of interesting creative and technical stuff :(

bluescrn commented on The Framework Desktop is a beast   world.hey.com/dhh/the-fra... · Posted by u/lemonberry

> In some ways, the Framework Desktop is a curious machine. Desktop PCs are already very user-repairable! So why is Framework even bringing their talents to this domain? In the laptop realm, they're basically alone with that concept, but in the desktop space, it's rather crowded already. Yet it somehow still makes sense.

And even more curious, Framework Desktop is deliberately less repairable than their laptops. They soldered on the RAM. Which makes it a very strange entry for a brand marketing itself as the DIY dream manufacturer. They threw away their user-repairable mantra when they made the Desktop, it's less user repairable than most other desktops you could go out and buy today.

'Piracy killed the Amiga' is often repeated. But piracy also made the Amiga legendary.

The Amiga just never got a serious update to those custom chips that made it such a great machine. AGA didn't bring much to the table (couldn't match the SNES/Megadrive). Accelerator cards and RAM expansions weren't enough. Then Doom arrived on PC, Commodore died, and it was all over.

(Didn't help that once Doom arrived, so many of the remaining Amiga coders stopped making 2D games and spent countless hours trying to imitate Doom on a machine that didn't have a chance of delivering a good Doom-like experience...)

You go 30 km/h. A kid runs on the street. You manage to stop just in front of it.

You go 40 km/h. The same kid runs on the same street. You brake the exact same way. You hit the kid with over 30 km/h. You just killed a kid.

Kids don't run out into the street chasing stray footballs anymore. They're all indoors staring at screens.

I don't see anything in the parent comments referencing or advocating for 0% tolerance speed enforcement. In the UK speed limits are typically enforced with a 10% grace factor.
bluescrn · a month ago
Instead, there's a push to reduce limits ever closer to zero.

30mph was close to the sweet spot and had been for decades. Or it would have been with a reasonable level of enforcement.

But as the ideological and/or climate-driven war on cars ramped up there's been a big push to reduce ever-more areas to 20mph, which is just too slow, especially when deployed widely/indiscriminately as it has been in Wales. (Used very sparingly, e.g. outside schools, 20mph limits were a good 'take particular care' signal to motorists - but that effect is lost when they're widespread)

Is it really about safety or is it about 'fuck cars'?

It's almost as if a balance could be achieved, both by reducing the number of cars and increasing the number of trains/busses.

Only in cities. And a lot of people don't want to live in ever-denser cities.

Speed enforcement has been extensively studied, and there are a lot of publicly available articles on the subject. The results are basically universally in favour of speed enforcement reducing motor vehicle collisions, reducing injury and cost.

Zero MPH = zero traffic = zero road deaths.

But without transport significantly more people will die from other things, due to reduced access to healthcare, employment, food, etc.

In a modern society, road transport is a critical part of our life support system. Those pushing for a what they see as a car-free utopia tend to ignore this.
