The issue is that the 10k fridge is not actually any better.

The "luxury" appliances can be double that and are still shit.

bleomycin · 2 months ago
Not quite accurate as a blanket statement. Munro did a very detailed tear down series of a sub zero refrigerator that’s very interesting. Youtube link: https://youtu.be/KAYj6m9QtDU

I wish more content like this existed. It’s the only type of review that is worth paying attention to.

Long story short if you live in an energy market like california the energy savings of the sub zero will likely offsets its additions cost over the lifetime of the unit.

Anyone using this as an Evernote replacement?

I use Evernote since what, 2005, 2008? Yet I hate every time I start it up. Such ugly bloatware it has become. And the silly “AI powered” features tacked on when it became fashionable… Man, replacing it would feel so good.

bleomycin · a year ago
Not sure hoarder is a direct replacement for evernote. As a former long time evernote note user I replaced it with https://notesnook.com

That’s exactly why I’m building a note-taking app in Qt C++ and QML that is vastly more performant than other note-taking apps[1].

This degradation of software by web apps shows in the lack of optimal resource utilization of even one of the most powerful chips of recent times.

Plume looks very interesting! One place I personally find many apps in this category fall down is their ability to handle pdf’s embedded or attached within notes gracefully. This applies to desktop and mobile apps.

This may be a slightly weird use case but I accumulate tons of pdf’s that are often relevant to my notes and want them easily embedded and viewable in a first class way. Obsidian is a great example of how not to handle a pdf locking it to a small portion of the window and not allowing it to be full screened.

Forcing the user to dump all of their pdf’s into something like google drive locked away from the rest of their notes is a crappy experience and h fortunately keeps me using apps like evernote purely for this functionality.

The _presentation_ is impressive, but the forecast is often the raw output from various models, and thus not entirely reliable. For example, I live in a valley where most forecast models smooth over giving more snow/cold than we ever get.

I have a similar issue living on a hill with the windy.com forecasts. Have you had success finding any forecast source/app that’s accurate for your microclimate? Everyone always points to forecastadvisor.com but that’s always pulling from some airport 20 miles away for me totally irrelevant.

The router is more of a server. Pihole is just an example (and yes a $35 pi would be plenty for it) but I have many old servers running all kinds of other things so I decided to update and consolidate some of this.

Has the 5800x and opnsense been able to successfully route 25Gbit/s? It's very rare to find anyone running even a 10Gbit link on opnsense/pfsense so it's difficult to know how it performs on high speed links with modern hardware. Would love any details you could share on this! (Might be worth updating your blog post with them)

Ars has definitely gone downhill, both in-house stuff like this and in the spamming of other Cande Nast junk. What is today's Ars-of-10-years-ago?
bleomycin · 3 years ago
Agreed. Unfortunately there don’t appear to be any viable replacements. Ultimately I just read less in general now which sucks. I hate what the internet has become.

Please someone make a photo/video storage for families. Our photo stream is not artisan award-winning landscapes, they're messy bunch of travel photos, pictures of receipts and random exif-less pngs sent to us.

bleomycin commented on Gut microbe linked to depression in large health study   science.org/content/artic... · Posted by u/pella
zackmorris · 4 years ago
Just another data point, but my journey through digestive issues and recovery was kicked off by the worst depression and burnout I ever experienced, which started in 2019 and lasted 3 years.

My best guess for what happened is that work stress, excessive celebration and coping with the cognitive dissonance of the pre-COVID era and subsequent pandemic, combined with overtraining and the misuse of protein shakes in place of food, left me in a chronically dehydrated state. The body tries to collect moisture from the gut, which opens an opportunity for bacteria to get into the body cavity and blood, which is colloquially called leaky gut. This sets off food sensitivities and eventually an autoimmune condition/response to lectins, gluten, etc, which have proteins similar to linings in the body, joints and thyroid. Then a cascade happens where everything goes out of whack quickly. In my case, I went from being in the best shape of my life, the strongest I had ever been in the gym, to barely able to get out of bed in the morning. In other people, it might present as chronic fatigue, arthritis, etc.

I didn't really believe any of this in 2018, and my meal plan then consisted entirely of everything that I can't eat today. So I consider what people say politely, but for the most part, they have absolutely no idea what they're talking about. This experience has made stuff like GMO foods sound absolutely insane to me. Like, why would we ever taint our food supply to make food 5 cents cheaper or "feed the world" when we've been operating under artificial scarcity since the end of the second world war? It's all a crock.

Every time you eat inflammatory food, the risk is similar to smoking a cigarette. Probably nothing will happen, but if it sets off your immune system, you may wake up one morning chronically depressed and/or unable to eat something that you rely upon. It got me after I turned 40, YMMV.

What you have described is EXACTLY what I have been experiencing myself over the last year. This is the first time I have ever seen my symptoms and trajectory laid out like this anywhere, it’s truly surreal. Words cannot convey how much I would appreciate any help finding treatment. I’m honestly nearing the end of my rope dealing with this with no end in sight. I’ve lost 30 pounds of muscle and I’m currently too sick to work anymore. My doctors have been useless and basically clueless.

IRC is still there, the average age is way over 30 though. Whether that's a bad thing is for you to decide :)

Some IRC channels have moved to Telegram, a few larger communities over to Discord.

I still associate Slack strongly with work stuff and don't really want to have any non-work related things on there.

bleomycin · 4 years ago
This is definitely a positive for me. Any suggestions for channels/networks to start with? Haven’t used IRC regularly in a decade+ which coincides with me being unable to make any new online friends since then. Facebook seems to be where a lot of “older” folk have moved to but i refuse to engage with that platform.
