They have found spears that are at least 400,000 years old, so we have hunted for food at least that long.

And if you look at our closest relatives chimpanzees, they also hunt without using tools. Humans and their ancestors probably ate whatever they had available, including meat.

blacksmith_tb · a day ago
Not much meat, however[1] (unless we're counting insects, I suppose, but even then, still mostly fruit).

Not being Microsoft Office®-compatible does not make something not an office suite. In that case, there is (by design) only one Office® suite in the world

> not a wiki/markdown editor

I was wondering if you meant WYSIWYG editing as opposed to markdown editing, but then you say

> La Suite Docs seems a product more similar to Atlassian Confluence

which is WYSIWYG (the best web-based wysiwyg editor I've ever used, in fact; even if I'd never choose it for being a vendor lock-in that has shown they want to own your data by removing the self-hosted options, maybe with exceptions for giant enterprises idk but at least we had to migrate and it wasn't fun)

so then what are you saying? What makes an 'office suite' an office suite to you?

blacksmith_tb · 2 days ago
Not the OP, but I would think most people would expect to see a word processor, a spreadsheet, some kind of presentation tool, and maybe a simple database. That's not just comparing to MS Office, that's LibreOffice as well? La Suite seems to have more and better collaboration tools than LO, but it is also less document-focused, just looking through their repos.

I've got the Android app and love it, as well as Knots 3D.

Most knot enthusiasts will already know about it, but in the analog world The Ashley Book of Knots is fantastic. Beautifully illustrated; the author, Clifford Ashley, was a marine painter and spent decades documenting almost 4,000 knots.

blacksmith_tb · 3 days ago
It is a wonderful catalog, but I don't find it to be as useful for learning to tie the actual knots as books by Budworth, Pawson, etc. (or Youtube, these days)

One of the cool aspects of knots for this audience is that they have a unix-like aspect where multiple individually-useful knots can be "piped" together, the example I like to use is the Trucker's Hitch:

https://www.animatedknots.com/truckers-hitch-knot

(which also can be tied in multiple ways, depending on which knots you combine to make it)

I can't tell whether the words to Fela Kuti's "Water No Get Enemy" are profound or trite.

But I can declare with 100% confidence that this song *rocks*! Go check it out.

blacksmith_tb · 4 days ago
I think "If water kill your child / Water you go use" is fairly profound, and a good demonstration of the idea that the pidgin expression refers to. And it rocks, of course.

Can you expand on the insights into the chinese medical system ?
blacksmith_tb · 11 days ago
I hadn't really even seen much in the way of recent, first / second person accounts of what it's like to receive chronic care in modern China. It's sad but maybe not surprising to see that it's dysfunctional in its own special way.

The dangers are obvious (and also there are some fascinating insights into how healthcare works practically in China). I wonder if some kind of "second opinion" antagonistic approach might reduce the risks.

Worth mentioning that though tea does contain polyphenols and flavinoids which are good for us (and l-theanine and caffeine which we enjoy introducing to our nervous systems), it's had a much bigger impact on health historically because it required us to heat water to boiling (or near boiling, depending on what kind of tea you're making).

Also, can't miss a chance to spice things up with the mention of adding salt to brewed tea[1]. Which is heretical, but seems palatable to me, though I probably wouldn't do it to good tea.

I was on the fence with switching to starlink from cellular data, but I realy cant stand the idea of a wrestling match with another giant corporation, weaponising "may", might", "occasionaly", "certain terms and conditions", "reserve the right to" better the perv I know then some new more ambitios one.
blacksmith_tb · 21 days ago
It's gross, but of course we think many ISPs are abusive in similar ways? I haven't ever used a Starlink connection, I wonder if their latency a problem for VPNs or tunneling.

> most have rose tinted glasses of better economic times from the past, and want to recreate the past instead of learning from it and using it to make the future better for future residents and businesses

So the voters are wrong? You know what's "better" for them, right? Whether they want it or not, right?

> we need to figure out how to get young people engaged locally

Because they are more in line with what you think?

PS

I'm being downvoted - but what is the point of local administrators, except to follow the voters demands? Sure, if you are a local politician, make your case, but local administrators ought to be doing whatever-it-is that people voted for. That's the whole point of voting, as I understand it.

The point is NOT to make people keep voting until they get it right, according to the administratots. That's the wrong way around! The administrators should be enacting whatever the voters want.

blacksmith_tb · 24 days ago
Not the OP, but I took their implication to be that 5% of the electorate decided the direction future development would take (or not take).

>If Google can guess your age, you may never even see an age verification screen. Your Google account is typically connected to your YouTube account, so if (like mine) your YouTube account is old enough to vote, you may not need to verify your Google account at all.

This has been proven false a bunch of times, at least if the 1000s of people complaining online about it are to be believed. My google account is definitely old enough to vote, but I get the verification popup all the time on YouTube.

I think the truth is, they just want your face. The financial incentive is to get as much data as possible so they can hand it to 3rd parties. I don't believe for a second that these social networks aren't selling both the data and the meta data.

blacksmith_tb · a month ago
I agree they want the face data, but I think it's less clear they want to "hand it" (presumably that's really "sell it"?) to third parties. My sense is Google and Apple and Meta are amassing data for their own uses, but I haven't gotten the impression they're very interested in sharing it?
