bks commented on Launch HN: Onyx (YC W24) – Open-source chat UI    · Posted by u/Weves

Something like this has a very limited shelf life as a product. What users need from chat is very user specific, trying to be the one chat to rule them all is not gonna end well, and as models get more capable each chat experience is going to need to be more customized.

Something like this could have a nice future as an open source chat framework for building custom UIs if it's well made and modular, but that isn't gonna work well with a SaaS model.

I've been using Onyx (and Danswer before it) for over a year, and I'd push back on this. We have Freshdesk, Bookstack, Google Drive, YouTrack, and Slack all connected. It seamlessly answers questions like:

"What's Max's GitHub username?" "I need wire transfer instructions for an incoming wire"

We also index competitors' helpdesks and KB articles to track new features they're rolling out. Our tech support team uses it daily because Freshdesk's AI is terrible and their internal KB search is lackluster. Onyx actually finds things. The value isn't in being "one chat to rule them all" — it's in unified search across disparate systems with citations. That's not getting commoditized anytime soon. Keep up the good work, team.

Forwarding emails is problematic especially if your provider for the primary mx does not have great spam filtering and then you end up sending spam to your backup account.

It certainly does not get around the ...if your account gets banned maybe the forwards will still work... concept but in general something like https://github.com/joeyates/imap-backup to backup your email and then add them to a typical backup process with your other files works well.

I started a startup to fix this exact problem integrating and configuring SSO/SAML.[0]

We launched here on HN 5 years ago[1] and today power SSO for OpenAI, Cursor, Vercel, and a thousand other apps. We also found the initial configuration step to be painful for users, so we built a self-serve wizard that enables enterprise admins to fix issues.[2]

It's still crazy how much complexity there is with enterprise identity systems and managing the user lifecycle for big orgs. It's like the whole thing is made of weird edge cases and even moreso when you add SCIM, RBAC, MFA, etc etc.

(If anyone reading this also loves suffering at the intersection of IAM and developer tools, we are hiring! Email in my profile :))

Just an FYI, your site does not have a working SSL certificate and many may not want to click through.

If anyone has questions about implementation details or how to adapt it for different workflows, I'm happy to help.

Why not archive vs. the destructive delete. There is a risk of misclassification to promotion and then 2 days later delete. Seems like a default aggressive stance.

Hi - I'm working on something like this because I needed it too ;-)

It's not yet ready for release, but I should be ready for beta-test within 2 months. If you're interested I would be happy to add you to my list of "people to notify when I am ready to beta test"

Is there any solution for statement downloading, like many small businesses I have credit card statements, bank accounts that I need to provide to my accountant.

While my "books" are synced via Quickbooks, they (accountants) really seem to love having the PDF in hand. I just need the PDFs and they do not send them via email...

Similar to objectiveFS - we use this in production for email sync between multiple postfix servers and dovecot. Is this a supported use case?
