If orcas live for decades, have memories, and have language, then they're telling each other stories about us. The Southern Resident Killer Whales are down to 70+ beings. They've probably figured out by now that humans are the ones responsible for their food supply getting decimated. I suspect orcas everywhere are trying to figure out ways to communicate with us and are doing an amazing job.

They probably haven't accounted for human denial and human-centric science. These two things lead to scientists being like "Gee! I wonder why they're parading their dead babies and carrying them around? They must be grieving!"

As opposed to a slightly more realistic interpretation:

"They must be grieving and are trying to tell us 'See what you're doing to us?'"

That casts the "wearing a dead fish" thing mentioned elsewhere in a darker hue.

If they had figure for home working vs in-office, that could really be something worth reading.

As it stands, I'm inclined to agree with others who have said there are just too many hidden variables here.

My guess: if non-genetic heritable elements -- epigenetics (such as modifications to DNA) -- are necessary for proper development, then the DNA sequence alone will not be enough to develop thylacines. (There are caveats, notably that some modifications can be inferred). However, the scientists will also be experimenting with gestation and creating embryos from modified cells, so whether epigenetics specifically is a limiting factor will be hard to tell.

Yes, that was basically my point. There has also been some fairly fevered speculation about epigenetics being responsible for some types of instinct - even "cross-generational memories" and the like.

The claim from the researchers is that there has been a lot of success in reintroducing human-raised animals into the wild, and that for mammals, most hunting/etc behavior is indeed instinctive.

An interesting test of some of the claims about epigenetics...

Oh, and never ever do #2 if you're visiting a country where drive-by purse snatching is a thing.

When two dudes drive by you on a scooter and one grabs your purse, you kinda want the strap to snap or you'll have a bad time.

bencollier49 · 4 years ago
Police in the UK recommend leaving your car keys somewhere obvious downstairs in your house for similar reasons.

Tiles, yes. Airtags, no. Although Apple provides an Android app that will tell you if someone has placed an Airtag on you without your knowledge.
bencollier49 · 4 years ago
Do you have a link to that Android app? Can't find it and I suppose I ought to prevent the chance of my being tracked by someone for some reason.

That said, this abrogates most of the security functions of the tags, doesn't it?

If you're interested in getting "true" results, perhaps you could do something like this:

name1@website.com

name2@website.com

etc.

In a spreadsheet, you have one column with the number, and another with the company name. You might want to change this up, putting the identifier in different parts of the email address, to avoid similar "canary" signals.

Personally, I use BitWarden to generate usernames for each website, to help keep my fingerprint (somewhat) scrambled. LastPass also has a good username generator. [1] I would just avoid using complete non-sense words, since there might be some amount of human review.

Just writing their name in reverse would probably work, and be less time consuming.

If I recall correctly you could run CGA and Hercules and the same time as they used different memory areas.

There were even a few debuggers that used this into the VGA era - program would be on the color monitor and your debugger on the black and white (actually usually orange or green).

bencollier49 · 4 years ago
IIRC VGA was at a000h and text at b800h.
