I've never seen a scrum master code. Sometimes the daily scrum meeting is run by ICs when the scrum master is busy or not around.

Hilarious. First line of the Agile manifesto is lost irony on these people I guess. Scrum and safe and all that nonsense is basically just a cargocult but not even a cargocult or anything useful

> Individuals and interactions over processes and tools

bdavis__ · 3 years ago
"individuals and interactions" is how you make great things happen. "processes and tools" is how you make boring things happen at scale and with high quality.

very few teams are willing to admit that they need to be making boring things happen.

agile is not a universal tonic.

Layoffs make it easier to get rid of underperforming people without having to file too much paperwork, so it probably has a better effect on the median employee quality to do layoffs instead of a hiring freeze.
bdavis__ · 3 years ago
Easier but not better. If you have a performance problem, there is a process in place to to deal with it. Not easy, but it gives the employee notice and the opportunity to improve. Vs. Gone.

My variation on this. Make it work then make it slightly less horrible.

Then repeat until you are proud of the work.

Having Google on your resume is not a good thing depending on who's reading it. Googlers generally need to be extensively re-trained on reality outside of companies that cargo-cult Google's practices, and I'll have some questions about the moral compass of anyone who shows up with Google on the resume.

The moral compass points to the money

12K? What is that 5 to 7% of the total employment. Just don't hire for 120 days. Accomplish the same results and you don't even need to make a press release.

Wound up being ~1200 bucks because they had to fully replace the lock, the ignition, and the battery. Also because they charged me 120/hour for labor, but what can I say—LA repairs for LA prices! I also didn't spend time getting competing quotes from different shops, so it's totally possible they charged me way more than market rate, but at the end of the day I have my car back and I am fortunate enough to still be able to pay my bills so it all worked out in the end.
bdavis__ · 3 years ago
dallas / ft worth you pay about $125 an hour for shop labor.

lot's of places have a placard with a $200 rate, but they never charge that much. (replaced headlights, they broke a wire, spent all morning on the car, cost was $250 in labor).

at least my experience, dealing with independents. i am sure a dealer has no shame on the rate and the hours.

That'd imply it's okay to put obese folks in cages without food until they've lost weight and I'd suggest that that's fucking insane. We've discovered another dimension!

Let’s give them all meth. That should help with weight loss.
bdavis__ · 3 years ago
I know that you are trying to make a point, but I think meth would be a viable treatment option for some people. Medically supervised and monitored. If you need to lose 100 lbs, it might be worth the other tradeoffs. For a short period of time.

Doesn’t it feel that, since COVID, we keep hearing more and more about these colossal, systemic failures more frequently? It makes me concerned because it seems most assume that at least someone knows what’s going on. Whereas the reality is that almost no one, if anyone, actually knows what’s going on, and that we have fragile software systems “running” everything. And COVID seems to have been a real shot to the brow for many of these systems.

I just worry about what hell we’re creating. Software basically captures miscommunication and poor understanding and executes it.

optimization. every human activity has been optimized to make more money. there is no capacity to deal with exceptions.
