Interesting, because on existing startups I've seen them build features/products solely because they believe VCs will like it.

Just look at AI and the amount of useless chatbots and other half-baked "AI" solutions several startups built in a rush after the topic became the latest fad and VCs were saying it's hot.

I wouldn’t count out the thought that there are many brainless people who convince themselves what’s “VCs will like” is “what they wish would exist”.
the_only_law commented on Ask HN: Anyone left software to study non-STEM subjects?    · Posted by u/exBarrelSpoiler

Unfortunately, those subjects are only meaningful if you go all the way to PhD.

This is my biggest blocker to leaving software.

Anything else that interests me, STEM or non-STEM is pointless without a PhD or a decent masters program at least. I don’t even have an undergrad degree. I was more or less willing to bite the bullet until I got laid off and had to start oissing away my savings trying to find another job I hate this time with less pay less enticing benefits in a shittier market, and it doesn’t seem like it’s possible now or in retrospect. Even if I did manage it, I’d have to lose basically the rest of my life to go all in on one thing in hopes it works out.

Cliff Bleszinksi's thoughts on the games industry should be taken with a gigantic grain of salt. The sorts of development he, in particular, describes has been recognised as destructive, and is increasingly uncommon at AAA studios that operate at the highest levels.

IIRC his time in the industry ended after he ran his studio into the ground by making an overwatch clone with boring characters, then trying to pivot to a Fortnite clone before the money finally ran out. I don't consider him a credible source for what is required to create successful games, and I wish he would step out of the spotlight to leave room for newer voices.

Tbh this kinda just feels like the industry playbook.

the_only_law commented on The Tech Plutocrats Dreaming of a Right-Wing San Francisco   newrepublic.com/article/1... · Posted by u/thm

It is entirely a result of unregulated capitalism in the tech sector. Not policy. San Fran policy needs to stop coddling the trillion dollar babies. SF in the 70's and 80's was fine before techbros came along.

Maybe people should start overturning their busses again.
the_only_law commented on "Accelerationism" is an overdue corrective to years of gloom   thenewatlantis.com/public... · Posted by u/jseliger

Can we just stop with these absolute positions already?

You can justify horrible atrocities if you strongly believe in extreme outcomes.

Effective altruism, accelerationism, doomers... All of these mindsets are toxic for the same reason that extreme religious stances are toxic. Believing that the world is going to end or that it's going to reach salvation or whatever extreme outcome you feel like, and then using that to justify short-term atrocities is not the way.

Stop putting infinity in your forecasts. It breaks everything. We have been down this path before many times and it never ends well.

Yeah.. that’s the goal.

I regret not coming in my original post armed with evidence.

Accusation of being inhuman:

> The - natural - way - of - being - a - human!!! (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39343369)

> Biological organisms not procreating despite living in material and caloric abundance is cosmically weird. (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39341358) (less hostile, still a swipe)

Attack on one's validity as a member of society:

> Whenever I encounter this attitude I like to remind that person that they should have no voice, whatsoever, in what happens in government and politics anymore (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39342079)

> but don’t expect the rest of us to give much credence to his opinions since he very well doesn’t care about our society. (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39342977)

Implication of social malignancy:

> that makes you a sort of parasite (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39342021)

> It's fucking weird. [...] I'm guessing they are just hitting up sex workers. (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39341263)

Implication that one's chosen lifestyle is inferior:

> People are just too selfish and think of kids as costing lattes and ruining their free time (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39342822)

> Kids aren't expensive. They're a distraction from dopamine and career advancement. [...] they'd rather jet set than settle down. [...] Instagram and the endless feed of social media, internet, and things to do. [...] Nobody I know wants to give that up. (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39341734) (this one is not hostile, but it's still in put-down territory)

Whether one views these as hostile can perhaps be a matter of perspective, but these posts do not invite cordial, level-headed debate.

This site is full of liars and sophists, among other scum. It frankly doesn’t matter whether you bring evidence or not.
