When for-profit companies write "Democratizes X for all" it means "for people who can pay and aren't embargoed". When they write "Simplify" it means "Get locked in to our ecosystem". When they write "Your favorite X" it means "The product we're selling to you", and so on.

Once you start reading press releases with this business-dictionary, it gets a lot easier to just close the tab and move on.

Nice work. Just FYI for anybody else - it adds an icon to status bar (if that's what it's called? - top right icons). I thought it was going to open an app window and didn't notice the icon, so thought it wasn't working. (In hindsight, it's clear from screenshots in app store).

I think it's called the menu bar, and apps that don't open windows (with an icon in the menu bar) are known as "menu bar apps". Until recently, these were a PITA to implement with Apple's SDK. Thankfully they provided API support sometime I think starting with macOS 13... before that it was pretty kludgy.

literally, how does anyone find this acceptable? It makes me feel dumb that I find this outrageous, like the emperor's new clothes: y'all can see this too right?

Yeah, it's a full on clown world at this point.

My point is that there is more to "VR Headset Market" than just "low end" - low end is one part of the market, but (right now) Facebook has that part locked up.

It may be that there are more places to compete in the VR Headset Market that people on HN don't know about.

Like you said, this is probably something like an Android play. Everyone was talking about the Apple Vision Pro as the VR Market's "iPhone moment" when it came out - maybe Meta Vision OS (or whatever they're calling it) is Facebook's Android moment.

And yeah, Facebook would probably be ok with others taking the low end of the market if they do it well. Right now, Facebook is the only company willing to take a loss on their own platform. So they do.

Not really sure if the Vision Pro could be called the iPhone of VR. It's not nearly as popular and its demand has ground to a halt.

Today in niche requests:

Does anyone have pointers to streaming electronic music (ideally trance / progressive trance, upbeat synthwave[0], or house) that has absolutely no vocals?

I listened to a lot of no-vocal electronica back in the 80s but I can't find anywhere to stream it now, even just as a long playlist on Apple Music or Spotify, without a vocal track being dropped in. Vocals are fine but I like non-vocal/just-electronics tracks upbeat music as ambient or to listen to while zoning out.

I emailed SomaFM and di.fm to ask and they have one stream apiece that mostly fits the bill but maybe there are others out there?

0 - Upbeat because I know about "lofi beats to study by" and that's a bit too slow for what I'm after. :)

Does anyone know if Thinner's releases are archived somewhere? Here's some of their stuff (it was a netlabel from awhile ago that released free music):

There's also Deep Mix Moscow Radio (probably more around soundcloud etc): https://archive.org/details/DeepMixMoscowRadioJuly1120160729...

So, purely from an economic standpoint: Windows is the only platform.
