I don't understand the hype because I'm out of the loop. Is the only advantage the lower hardware requirements, thus cost? Is there something I'm missing?

Or just sideload a raspberry pi via USB-C for the (arguably) cooler and more portable solution.

Or if you just like the form factor, you could replace your iPad with a Surface Pro/Go and install Surface Linux.

What does Surface Linux get you? I installed standard Fedora on my Surface Go 2 and have never had any complaints.

namecheap also supports .dev. I purchased mine there years ago.

I cant tell which keyboard they are actually selling. Most of the pictures show a sleek split keyboard with buttons that look programmable -- especially around the thumbs, but on the buy button and store -- its a square, generic looking split keyboard. Am I missing something?

edit: I suppose this is just mostly marketing. The new one looks pretty interesting.

If you click through to the previous article, it says they'll be launching a kickstarter campaign in spring.
arnado commented on Tell HN: Google returning 'Untitled' results that redirect to malware/spam    · Posted by u/nsilvestri

About a year and a half ago almost half the results I was getting consisted of those. Most of them were on `.it` TLDs, and I've been blocking all those results since.

There is an official Google publication on this phenomenon that was published a really long time ago, but I'm unable to find it anywhere. Would anyone reading this perhaps know where to find it?

arnado · 4 years ago
This is interesting. Just the other day I did a search on DDG and had the same thing happen, a full page of .it TLDs that vaguely matched what I was searching for. This is the only time I have seen that and unfortunately I don't remember what search terms I used, probably something related to my recent video card issues.

I saw your answer to 'how to get into hardware design'. If you're willing to answer noobie questions I've got another one for you :)

I put together an ErgoDox by following the directions (and by soldering. Lots of soldering :) ) but I don't really understand how the circuits work.

In particular I'd like to put together a keyboard that connects the switches using wires instead of a PCB, but I don't know why there's all the ICs here and there, or what they're doing, or even where to find a circuit diagram of the ErgoDox, nor how to analyze those circuits.

Could you recommend a good 'next step' for getting more familiar with the various parts that go into something like an ErgoDox?

I'm enough of a noob that I'm not going to be surprised if you just link me back to your repo here (in which case I apologize in advance) :)

I actually built my first mechanical keyboard hand wired, it helped understand the basics of how it all worked.

I don't remember if it was this exact guide, but I'm pretty sure I was following Matt3o's guide when I did it: https://matt3o.com/hand-wiring-a-custom-keyboard/

edit: it may have actually been this one: https://deskthority.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=6050&start=

I do have a firewall at home and I can open up a port and forward that to the laptop. Just that I don't want to spend money on DynDNS services and was trying to find a free solution. Thanks for confirming!

Self-hosting is so so cool. Nothing more satisfying that hosting your own website from scrappy ol equipment :-)

I used namecheap to register my domain, and they have an option for dynamic DNS without ongoing fees (besides domain fees, I guess). I would be surprised if other registrars didn't have something similar.

very cool! thanks for sharing. I don't have the equipments to drill holes on aluminum parts, I will probably need to use https://8020.net/ to build one.
arnado · 4 years ago
You might also want to look at the mostly printed CNC, which uses standard conduit/pipe for the frame.

My favorite feature personally is the built-in 2FA support. Click and it logs into your account and copies the 2fa code to clipboard so just paste on next screen.

Multiple vaults too is nice but I know others have ways to limit exposure of passwords in similar manners.

arnado · 5 years ago
Bitwarden offers this as well, but I don't really understand why you would want it. If someone compromises your password manager, 2FA is now worthless. Or am I misunderstanding how it works?
