arcfour commented on I run a full Linux desktop in Docker just because I can   howtogeek.com/i-run-a-ful... · Posted by u/redbell

You know, it's funny—I always hear people say they want to keep their Windows-only applications and run Linux alongside it, but I made the switch almost a decade ago and honestly can't say I'm worse off for it. And frankly, there's never been a better time to make that leap; the Linux desktop has finally hit its stride and become genuinely mature, with the polish and features one would expect from a modern operating system.

Apart from a handful of games, I haven't actually needed Windows for anything. So I'm curious—what Windows-only software is keeping you on it, OP?

I found the initial lack of mention of the recent Supreme Court ruling weird and when I read the actual Circuit Court decision I felt the actual article was bad, biased journalism bordering on outright lying.

The article spends a lot of time telling us about this fourth generation farm and telling us about workers who quit after one day.

The actual circuit decision says they didn't provide adequate housing -- failing to put insect screens on doors and windows leading to an insect infestation and putting mattresses directly on the floor which is known to create mold. They also failed to provide free food as required and even started selling beverages at profit with no notice you the workers. They are also supposed to provide free transportation but were found to be using drivers who were driving illegally without licenses in all 5 vehicles.

I'm in favor of them getting a trial in a real court but the whole article smells fishy to me and came across as incredibly biased.

That is a much different response than "this article is not newsworthy at all, why would you even publish it?"

Kind of weird framing as "historic" and "violated the Constitution" when the actual decision from the court just says,

"Following the Supreme Court’s recent decision in SEC v. Jarkesy, 603 U.S. 109 (2024), we hold that Sun Valley was entitled to have its case decided by an Article III court."

Usually it is a non-story when lower courts start following a brand new Supreme Court precedent. Not sure why this one is on HN or why even really why it warranted 10,000 words in the original link.

It was interesting to read about the impact that unconstitutional actions by the government had on actual people in a real case, and how a Supreme Court ruling remedied it (partially). What a bizarre response. Do you have something against these people or something?

Thanks - so instead they’ll be sued by someone under those new US state laws that cover sites featuring some % of adult content?

(There was a worrisome blog post someone shared here on HN a few weeks ago.)

I like that you’re posting “check and mate the DEA doesn’t do health insurance” as a gotcha when nobody in this entire thread has at any point said that the DEA is directly involved in health insurance. It is like loudly claiming victory that you have established that doctors aren’t in charge of trimming the hedges in your neighborhood

No, I'm pointing out that people like yourself are unable to recognize (willfully) government interference resulting in negative outcomes with the government interference you champion. Does it hurt to have this level of cognitive dissonance?

"Yes, the government is responsible for these awful things. But if it was responsible for even more things, it would be different and good, because someone told me it would!"

Insurance often refuses to cover ADHD meds, so a lot of us our paying the full price. Which is garbage, and is very much to do with insurance and our system of it.

That has nothing to do with the DEA though. You're conflating different concerns.

Sure it is. There are plenty of players out there willing to invest in a long game of chance, if the potential payout is intelligence.

They sure bungled that one then!

They issue licenses for making the drugs and getting the raw materials to make them. The process is inflexible at best and if manufacturer A hits their quota, they can’t get additional raw materials, even if manufacturer B has excess.

Like most things associated with drug criminality, the rules are stupid and capricious.

And this has nothing to do with insurance, but does have to do with government bureaucracy negatively impacting people getting treatment for an illness.

They get to decide how many of each pill manufacturers may produce each year, and how they’re controlled.

Right, so nothing to do with insurance or our system of it.
