This is similar to the moral panic around Google and Wikipedia. No, people won't stop learning because of chatgpt.

Studying and developing critical thinking is more important than ever before. What people miss when they babble stuff like "math is useless" or "literature is useless" or "history is useless" is that those things are not important by themselves, they are important because you are learning models and tools to interpret the world.

You know, the things that differentiate you from a dumb machine.

apple-sauce · 3 years ago
But you will have no incentive to learn a model to interpret world, because there will be a ML-based model that computes that for you, much faster with less effort from your side. Some people already doing that with ChatGPT & co. And more will come, because it only exploits our worst evolutionary enemies agains ourselfs. Learning IS hard, let alone critical thinking. Let just ask GPT-3. And then again. And again. More is better, right?

Could it be that there is no gravity, and what we perceive as gravity is the pressure from the expanding universe?
apple-sauce · 3 years ago
Isn't that gravity is just a result of clock tick rate is slower if you are closer to some matter?

That's not the only trust model at play. Here is a different example of where FHE becomes very useful.

Cancer researchers will benefit greatly from patient data sets that might include very privacy centric elements such as genome sets, past medical history (of both them and relatives to help understand heredity aspects of the disease). Most people making an informed decision may be uncomfortable with this information being made widely available, at best perhaps OK with a select few groups, but not available to anyone researching this domain.

FHE would solve this, the data can be made available to anyone with compute power that wants to help, while still respecting the privacy of the patients.

Are "privacy" issues are more important for people than "dying from cancer" issues though?
apple-sauce commented on Ask HN: How did you correct your sleep patterns?    · Posted by u/behnamoh

The best way that did work for me is do not use alarm clock.

Setup a proper sleeping place first: a) it must be dark enough (if you close your eyes, wave your hand in front of your face and can see brightness changes, then it's not dark enough); b) it must be cold enough, and you likely need to have proper warm and heavy blanket; c) it must be quiet enough; if you have noisy environment, you can mask it by using source of monotonous noise; I've found, that air purifier produces decent enough masking noise; d) air inside the room must be fresh.

Then, take a break and allow yourself to sleep as much as possible without setting an alarm clock or having to worry about things to do. Your body will figure out sleep schedule automatically.

apple-sauce commented on Response to “WireGuard: great protocol, but skip the Mac app”   lists.zx2c4.com/pipermail... · Posted by u/motiejus

Honestly, I don't get it.

Apple makes big money from their ecosystem. Wireguard developer provides high-quality solution for free, helping to grow proprietary ecosystem, essentially helping Apple to make more money indirectly and directly (by giving 30% from donations).

In return developer gets tons of hate from users and from Apple itself in the form of delayed reviews, rejects and constant threat of violating some rule and getting dev account banned.

In my opinion, the only solution for this is to stop providing services for free and put a price tag on the app.

I understand, that developer is a kind, not-yet-burnt-out person who wants to be the world a better place by providing the free way to exchange information securely, but doing so for free for corporate ecosystem is clearly not sustainable, neither financially nor emotionally.
