I've had a similar experience with Apple Store employees many, many times: I walk in and vaguely describe what I want, and they steer me to the cheapest item they sell that could possibly meet my stated requirements.

I've also returned Apple products multiple times, once (recently) without the packaging, and once several days past the return window. They refunded me every time, no questions asked.

This makes me wonder if it's part of their training?

It is - you’re not trained to upsell, only to give the customer what they need to do what they want.

Can be a little annoying (an employee actively tried to downsell my partner, even though they knew what they wanted), but overall it’s a nice practice.

these Macs can't go below Tahoe. People on Mac Rumours were complaining about M5 MacBooks unable to install Sequoia, so it's safe to assume Pro/Max chips will be the same.

This. You can’t downgrade below the version the device ships with (a forked build of the current version at time of mass production)

That's for iOS devices though

It’s also for macOS

For Apple Business Manager, Apple forces you to create a separate new account.

Yes - all ABM accounts are Managed Apple Accounts, not Personal ones. You can’t mix and match (they each have different features).

I've never personally understood the point of macOS for power users (other than cases where you're required to use one e.g. for work). I can understand it for casual users who just want something simple that works for basic tasks, but what does macOS offer a power user that Linux doesn't, and which makes it worth sacrificing the ability to run your machine the way you want? In Linux you'd solve OP's problem by just building up from a minimal distro like Arch or NixOS.

I use a Mac because I have no desire to maintain a Linux box. The software I want is all there, it has a great *nix terminal, and the hardware quality is second to none. I work with computers all day - at home I just want to be able to focus on the task at hand.

Nailed it? Maybe close. They still have a keyboard button dedicated to Copoilot. That thing can’t be reconfigured easily.

Do you mean if it’s idle, or if it’s maxed out? I’ve had a few relatively idle free-tier VMs with Oracle and I’ve not received any threats of shutoff over the last 3 years I’ve had them online.

Idle - low usage Minecraft server was the issue for me

As an aside, if you're using a Hetzner VPS for Umami you might be over-specced. I just cut my Hetzner bill by $4/mo by moving my Umami box to one of the free Oracle Cloud VPS after someone on here pointed out the option to me. Depends whether this is a hobby thing or something more serious, but that option is there.

All fine and well, but oracle will threaten to turn off your instance if you don’t maintain a reasonable average CPU usage on the free hosts, and will eventually do so abruptly.

This became enough of a hassle that I stopped using them.

> Apple Silicon cannot boot Windows ARM

That's totally up to Microsoft… they could done a licensing deal with Apple years ago to enable Windows ARM to run natively on Apple Silicon hardware.

angulardragon03 · 4 months ago
This. It’s technically possible (the same way Asahi uses), but Microsoft has to bring the support in Windows.

Does this affect the linux version of homebrew? I'm hoping this has no effect.
angulardragon03 · 4 months ago
No, because there is no codesigning/notarization on Linux.
