The "weird" thing about YouTube Shorts is no matter how many times you hide them (by clicking "Not Interested" or "Show fewer of these", however they label it), YouTube will continue to show them to you in your feed. I've hidden that crap 100 times and no doubt it'll be back soon.

Here's the complete list of Census-defined cities in New York that have Walmart locations:

Albany Amsterdam Auburn Batavia Canandaigua Corning Cortland Fulton Geneva Glens Falls Gloversville Hornell Hudson Ithaca Kingston Lockport Newburgh Niagara Falls North Tonawanda Norwich Ogdensburg Olean Oneida Oneonta Oswego Plattsburgh Rome Utica Watertown

Note: New York is interesting because many populated areas are classified as "towns" or "villages" rather than "cities" by the Census Bureau, so this list excludes those locations. For example, many Long Island and Westchester Walmart locations are in towns or CDPs, not incorporated cities.

Exactly. Albany is the only place on that list approaching the size of Syracuse, and its Walmart is several miles outside of town on the other side of the freeway.

I cannot recommend this Road Guy Rob video enough: https://youtu.be/K1TFOK4_07s?si=IwCK4sxVgw5Konu4

TL;DW: The difference in tax revenue between a surface parking lot and a business with subterranean parking is so vast, that cities can justify using value to underwrite the loans necessary for developers to do the work. (Called "Tax Increment Financing") This model is proving extremely successful with cities that try taking it on.

I have a hard time with Road Guy Rob's style, but that's a great video. Thanks.

I have tried almost all of the Tastykakes that I could purchase here on the east coast. They seem quite average in terms of quality. While I have never eaten a Twinkie and Tastykake side by side I do concede that Twinkies these days are a bottom of the barrel level of quality and TastyKakes are at least a small level above. I'm just looking at that ingredient list and it seems quite processed.

I think you misinterpreted my original comment, but I applaud your diligence in sampling the entire Tastykake product line. The pies are my favorite, though I rarely eat them as I value my health. I would not touch a Twinkie unless I were starving, or perhaps as part of a paid stunt if the money was right.

I don't think thats true, I looked them up and this looks just as processed: https://www.heb.com/product-detail/tastykake-butterscotch-kr... (scroll down to see the ingredients)

Perhaps you are referring to a Tastykake from a bygone era?

alamortsubite · 7 days ago
It is true. The shelf life of those Tastykakes is three weeks. A Twinkie's is six. The shelf life of a Tastykake pie is seven days. They haven't changed much or at all since I was a kid.

Have you tried a Tastykake (and a Twinkie)? The difference is obvious if you can spare the calories.

Note that this is only about European governments choosing to not use US software.

Yes, and it's clear European governments are just catching up to the sentiment of European people.

The French have created Mintel. May the world tremble.

It's a shame the Americans don't see the ramifications of their political decisions.

alamortsubite · 7 days ago
It's fun to think about what Minitel might have become if it had been born when today's Leopards Eating People's Faces Party had been in power, rather than the early 80's when Silicon Valley was dunking on everybody. It was way ahead of its time.

Such a shame that so many U.S. citizens do not see the ramifications of their political decisions.

Each one of these actions is a stepping stone the world is taking as a direct consequence of U.S. political negligence. And however difficult it was to render this consequence, it will be tenfold, or hundredfold, as difficult to reverse course.

I remember a conversation I had with my uncle before the 2024 election during which I told him Donald Trump's leadership would result in a no-less-disastrous American version of Brexit, if he were somehow elected a second time. My uncle's an avid Fox News/Newsmax watcher, and had absolutely no idea what I was talking about.

Branding is very powerful.

(Never rebrand, it'll just disturb pleasant memories)

True, I imagine the Twinkie Pavlovian response is a tough one to shake.

If you stretch the definition of a "city" to include its suburbs, sure, but that's outside the context of TFA. There are no Walmarts in Syracuse, for example. There's one nearby, but not in the city. Adding solar to suburban lots is surely a win, but we're talking about urban lots here.
