I use "communication snippets" or "fillers"

for example

> Person A: “Hey, do you have any idea why this number is low? It’s a mystery … nobody I’ve talked to yet seems to know.”

is really long

I just say

> curious; why is that number low?

other prefixes I use are:

1. adding to the discussion

2. for discussion

3. low pri, no need to respond

4. neutral

5. nonactionable

6. sharing opinion

Great point.

Any recommendations on how to think about expected value when minimizing suffering?

Also, I think pain and suffering are very different, and I completely failed to communicate that in the essay.

I purposefully avoided hard questions in this post. I'm much more interested in systems that reliably lead to good questions and good-enough answers.

But I should've addressed more about how to think outside of yourself. Lately, I've been reconsidering my beliefs around "changing the world" and trying to focus more on my family and community. Still searching for the right balance

I don't think it's about "minimizing suffering". There is things to suffer for, and there are things which you shouldn.t

I like to prefix my questions with "When should"

Therefore:

> When should I suffer?

and

> When should I not suffer?

Not everything is important. Not all mentions, threads, conversations, channels are important.

Prioritize the most important ones.

Using Slack subsections I prioritize like so:

  1. P0 - Stakeholders and Peers
    Includes my manager, and peers I work with regularly
    Includes announcement groups
    Includes leadership groups
  2. P0 - Adhoc Conversations
    Anything with a P0 individual
  3. P1 - Reports
    All of my direct reports
  4. P0 - Incidents
    Anything that needs my attention
    Alerts, monitors, etc
  5. P0 Engineering
  6. Almost everything else
  7. Guilds and Social

Scenario, if I save a link from HackerNews, I like to save the submission of it as well. I wonder if I send a HackerNews link to forlater.email; it can parse the article and remind me I got it from HackerNews.

For example, I'd submit "https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31852384" and in the email, it'd contain:

1. HackerNews link (so i can review the comments as well)

2. Original article link and content
