That strategy may be cathartic, but it will have the opposite of the desired effect. If there's any hope of changing someone's mind, it has to start by respecting their opinion no matter how wrong you think it is. If you start a fight you'll get a fight.

This may eventually work after a long effort, but in the meantime, the person with the fascist thoughts will be deriving social support from you not having cut them off. "Haha, I love fascism, and Bill still likes me and hangs out with me, so I guess I'm good!"

As a U.S. citizen, I’m beginning to ask myself how to take more meaningful measures to help bring an end to this behavior. I’m not a political activist and generally try to mind my own business, but that mindset only worked when I felt I could trust the system to self-correct. It seems our judicial system can barely keep up, and Congress is doing next to nothing.

Don't let the people in your life casually get away with promoting fascism. Punish them socially.

Interesting to see no ships in Hudson Bay, given its importance in early North American history.

It was only good as a way for the British to get into the north for fur trade, since the French controlled Canada/New France (and the St Lawrence/Great Lakes waterways)

I was more surprised the doctors even let him run after a heart procedure.

Respectfully, if this guy has been doing it for ten years, it’s obviously not so bad as you make it out to be. It’s not a grind set mentality, it’s just one guys choice to exercise in a certain manner.

I am a runner. I train at what is probably the 80th percentile for longer distances, so I am by no means an expert. But I do understand that if you are running 7 miles a week, most of the time, your body isn’t going to be that beat up, especially if you are taking it slow.

Ten years might not be long enough for long term damage to make itself known. In fact, most of the time, it's nowhere near long enough.

However, the cardio should help. With overall health that is, not whatever blown knee or hip or whatever he'll have to deal with later.

It's remarkable how quickly Communism collapsed in Eastern Europe the moment Soviet support went.

Despite decades of intense propaganda, killings of people in uprisings and the methods of Stasi as described in the article.

Even with all that effort most people didn't believe in the regime.

So it's hard to say whether the Stasi's tactics worked. Only people in the regimes like Ceausescu and Honecker actually thought people liked it. And perhaps not even them.

Soviet support? More like Soviet control.

Anyone know why it seems that Feynman is coming under attack lately - most prominently by You Tuber Angela Collier whose "the sham legacy of Richard Feynman" now has nearly 1M views? I don't understand it at all.

If you watch it all the way to the end (or skip towards the end if you like), she does mention this legacy is a result of exaggerated stories not even written down by him, but related second hand by people around him with their own attitudes (and financial inventives). He was probably not an angel, even a bit of a cocky dick maybe sometimes in the way of the times, and perhaps a bit vain, but stories related second hand when he was probably joking around don't necessarily represent the true history of his life.

She has good things to say about him in the end, from the evidence of his actual behaviour, like doing education outreach and loving his wife.

That trivializes it, I think. A ton of what people do related to their jobs is marketing at some level. A lot of people here probably resent marketing and self-promotion (to a certain level) but that's the way the world works. If no one has any idea what you do, either directly or through your manager, guess who is getting the chop if the company cuts back even a little.
afterburner · a year ago
That's fine.

I would also argue self-marketing is important when you have lazy or bad managers.

Many people wrote about why it is important to blog, but I never heard of what you just stated about credibility. That's the best and most convincing thing I ever heard. Thank you very much for having shared it here.

It's just self-marketing. Nothing new.

I could play for 5 hours then gave up because similar reasons. In situations like this I usually think it should be an acquired taste, but in this case, I'm pretty much confident that I'd have never liked it. UX was the biggest pain point for me BTW.

I thought it was a drag having to schlep around town for a point and click game.
