It looks like a bucket hat.

Bucket hats are pretty useful as far as hats go. Glad to see they have a long standing heritage!

Great work! The video does state this clearly that it was about the journey first and foremost and that's great, but yet to me it feels unfinished when it ends as soon as we get to the really fun stuff, so it's complete in the sense of it being well-produced, publishable content, but it's uploaded as soon as it's publishable, and I'm left with "what, that's it?", as I've mostly been looking at milling and some coating. I get this often with similar videos today. Either it's just me (entirely possible) or it's a sign of the times.

Meh, there's always been excellent content and half-way there content. I wouldn't read much into it personally. There's always something glowing somewhere.

Amazon's problems with fraudulent memory products were well documented in 2023 when GRC published their test results for a dozen such drives purchased from the site. In response, GRC developed a free program, called "ValiDrive", to scan and test drives for this growing problem.

ValiDrive performs a quick, random-sequence spot-check across the drive's entire declared storage space. At every location it verifies the successful storage and retrieval of random (unspoofable) test data.

https://www.grc.com/validrive.htm

The program has been extensively tested, is freely downloadable and comes from a well respected site with a long history in the security business. Steve Gibson announced this development in 2023 and it has been downloaded over 600,000 times.

https://www.grc.com/freepopular.htm

In addition to this effort, Steve has been creating an in-depth weekly podcast called "Security Now" for over 20 years. An archive of all 1039 podcasts and transcripts can be found online where they are freely downloadable.

I know Steve Gibson as the author of "Trouble in Paradise", a tool for validating and testing zip disks and drives back in the day. He even aired on one of G4 TV's tech channels once. This guy knows and loves testing storage.

Unfortunately the internet is just going to be these ChatGPT comments now, isn't it.

Do we really think an account that's been here since 2009 and claims to be a software developer is using ChatGPT to write comments on Hacker News?

I'm pretty sure PuTTY is no longer needed needed except possibly as a user mode pageant.
accrual · 11 days ago
As far as I know it's still one of the best ways to handle serial connections on Windows, and a surprising amount stuff still supports or defaults to serial. Great for managing headless OpenBSD systems.

It’s not needed on modern Windows strictly speaking, but many users still prefer it.
accrual · 11 days ago
Yeah, I use Windows Terminal for a lot of day-to-day stuff, but PuTTY is still my go-to for older systems, serial stuff, SSH tunnels, and anything needing more detailed control over the session.

Thats a blast from the past, I'd completely forgotten about putty (moved away from Windows when Vista came out). The pain of SSH on an OS that seems to be intentionally made to be as clunky as hell for developers however is never something I'll miss.
accrual · 11 days ago
It's kinda wild it took until part way through Windows 10's life to get an integrated SSH client. Even then it had to be downloaded from the store. I believe it's a native part of Windows 11 now.

I'm pretty happy with Windows Terminal these days, but before then, it was all PuTTY + SecureCRT.

While I do agree — using at least a non-monospaced font would be a choice that's nicer to the reader.
accrual · 12 days ago
Pros on cons I suppose. I liked the monospace font and I think it works well for some content, especially shorter form content.

IMO a nice serif font is ideal for long form content though. I remember reading the serifs help guide ones eyes into the next character and create more unique shapes than sans or monospace.

Yes, I found the main body perfectly readable, but the lighter grey on white could be a problem for some. I'd use something like #777 or darker here.

You can have radical empathy with somebody while standing against and fighting every single thing they stand for. Indeed empathy /helps/ you fight better, because you can begin to fight root causes rather than fighting symptoms, and help people heal rather than just shouting them down.

You as an individual are not required to do this if you don't want to, but if a movement wants to be successful then a degree of empathy with those who are resisting the movement is likely necessary for success.

To have empathy with a view is not condoning it

> a degree of empathy with those who are resisting the movement is likely necessary for success

A great salesperson I learned from would often say something like "don't fight the resistance, join the resistance" with the implication that one must see through the other party's eyes before you can have a chance to really affect them. One must make them feel heard and understood rather than fought against.
