SunshineTheCat commented on Why isn't online age verification just like showing your ID in person?   eff.org/deeplinks/2025/12... · Posted by u/hn_acker

There's a giant difference between stopping kids having full reign on what is now essentially the whole world of information - and instant access to strangers, than there is making sure they eat healthy, help out, and don't have bad teeth .... but I'm sure you know that :)

The only difference is in parents who raise and protect their kids without needing a law...and people who want government to be mom and do it for them and are willing to make everyone else suffer for it :)

I'm not sure why we don't just make a law that parents must set parental controls on their kids' devices. We do this for most other things.

We should then make laws that parents must tell their kids to clean their room. Next we can make laws that parents must tell their children to eat their veggies. What about chore laws? Teeth brushing laws? Stop arguing with your sister laws! More laws!

I agree with you when I believe a choice can be freely made. But peer pressure as a child is extremely intense, and if you're the one weirdo you know whose parents don't allow them on Snapchat, it can cause lots of strife and probably be ineffective anyway.

So I'm assuming weed laws have put an end to the "peer pressure" of teens getting other teens to smoke it?

Life always comes down to personal choices and it's always the hard ones that are the most important. No law will ever change that.

I suspect kids just find their way around things.

And then they're on platforms with zero protections because nobody knows they're a teen... end result is worse.

This is a pretty common cycle.

Government steps in to "fix" a "problem" and then:

Solve nothing.

Create problems with their "solutions."

Implore the populous to reelect them to fix all the problems.

Rince. Repeat.

I actually feel that teens shouldn't be on social media at all. But I also don't think I should be able to lord that opinion over other people via fiat.

Sugar is pretty bad for teens as well but I don't think banning that will solve health issues anymore than this will help teens.

Personal decisions > a government trying to be mom

Governments always end up doing the most damage when their control is "for the good of their constituents."

This might seem like a good thing while they're parenting for you on things you agree with, however, there will likely come a time when they do something you don't and by then it will be too late.

SunshineTheCat commented on Ask HN: Should "I asked $AI, and it said" replies be forbidden in HN guidelines?    · Posted by u/embedding-shape

I strongly disagree - when I post something that AI wrote I am doing it because it explains my thoughts better than I can - it digs deeper and finds the support for intuitions that I cannot explain nicely. I quote the AI - because I feel this is fair - if you ban this you would just lose the information that it was generated.

This is like saying "I use a motorized scooter at walmart, not because I can't walk, but because it 'walks' better than I can."

While we will never be able to get folks to stop using AI to “help” them shape their replies, it’s super annoying to have folks think that by using AI that they’re doing others a favor. If I wanted to know what an AI thinks I’ll ask it. I’m here because I want to know what other people think.

At this point, I make value judgments when folks use AI for their writing, and will continue to do so.

I am just sad that I can no longer use em dashes without people immediately assuming what I wrote was AI. :(

What's crazy is you're starting to see an overreaction to this fact as well.

The other day I posted a short showcasing some artwork I made for a TCG I'm in the process of creating.

Comments poured in saying it was "doomed to fail" because it was just "AI slop"

In the video itself I explained how I made them, in Adobe Illustrator (even showing some of the layers, elements, etc).

Next I'm actually posting a recording of me making a character from start to finish, a timelapse.

Will be interesting if I get any more "AI slop" comments, but it's becoming increasingly difficult to share anything drawn now because people immediately assume it's generated.

By what other means would people with a product or service to provide reach other people who are interested in obtaining that product or service?
SunshineTheCat · 9 days ago
Wild to be in the age of free reach across multiple social media platforms and be unaware how to sell a product/service without advertising.
