Amazon.com is likely the most a/b tested piece of software on the planet. It is ugly and clunky because that's what _works_ - same with Alibaba and Yahoo JP.
abvdj2 · 3 years ago
That is not true, some parts might be clunky because that works, but there's also many parts that are clunky simply because it's hard to make a change without breaking anything. But amazon doesn't care due to their strong position in the market and because AWS is their cash-cow anyways.

Huh? Userscripts are dead according to author, but I apparently never got the notice because I have about a dozen of those things installed right now. Three of them are for YouTube because it's this much annoying as is.
abvdj2 · 3 years ago
What do your user scripts do if you don't me asking?

On a site note: Been looking for one to show reccomendations always based on simmiliar vids, not my recently watched and whatever the black box algorithm is offering me. Unfortunately I never figured out how do it properly, since the position of the element seems to be random and sometimes straight up missing.

What vpn works with this? Neither Mozilla nor mullvad could trick the bbc iplayer
abvdj2 · 3 years ago
Might need a dedicated IP for that. I had some success in the past with the Proton VPN premium/streaming option, not sure what the exact name is

I wonder if you can, under GDPR, request that all your data is deleted and then create a new account. Not allowing you to create a new account could be argued as a violation of GDPR as it would mean that they kept personally identifiable data about you.
abvdj2 · 4 years ago
that's wrong, they are allowed to keep some data
abvdj2 commented on Amazon abruptly fires senior managers tied to unionized warehouse   nytimes.com/2022/05/06/te... · Posted by u/pseudolus

You know those help wanted commercials Amazon floods media with, "We pay $15 to start, blah, blah. Start a new career."

I just assumed they were always hiring because of consistent growth.

According to the guy (forget his name. Wears a gold chain.) representing the union; Amazon fires a lot of employees. Many for no reason.

(I once read a restaurant success book. Everything he recommended made sence, except one, and it does make sence, but it's weaselly.

His recommendation to restaurants was to fire all employees every six months. Turn over the semi-skilled completely. His reasoning was a new employee didn't complain, didn't steal (this was before companies had cams everywhere, gps tracking, and wrist movment counters), and worked harder.)

I believe this is Amazon strategy.

It's usually a bit harder to fire union workers for no reason.

Fire them before they can see the inequities in the company.

There's an internal tool showing how many total employees (~1m at that time iirc) where hired after/before you for . After somewhere between 6months-12months I was somewhere in the middle, meaning about 500k employees must have left and new 500k joined.

Just to give an estimate. Covid might have contributed to that though, probaly more temp workers than usual.

I have not followed this at all. Forgive my ignorance.

Wasn’t there a time when China money and students from China were overrunning Ivy League schools? Was this an attempt to finally put an end to this?

Slightly unrelated, in California, there is a problem with China money being brought in to buy homes in cash in certain school districts.

abvdj2 · 4 years ago
I think that is a problem in almost every western city

My /etc/hosts file on the machine I work on all day blocks 68k hosts 24/7. No social media sites at all except Twitter. No ads.

Meanwhile, the Leechblock browser add-on stops me from using the few things I do otherwise (bits of Reddit, HN) allow between 09:00 and 17:00 which is not perfect but it's a start. Except ... I disable it a lot :(

abvdj2 · 4 years ago
would you share the hosts file by any chance? 68k seems better than what I have

It's amazing that you can send $100m to anyone in the world with a phone, anytime day or night and it costs $2. And it's direct to the other person; no banks or payment processors.

I don't get all of the negativity HN has towards Bitcoin. This simple ability is so amazing and scifi to me.

abvdj2 · 4 years ago
What specifically is sci-fi about it? If there were no regulations, I would be able to do the same with my bank account or credit card in a much more efficient way.
