is it still invite only? I tried downloading the app to give it a whirl, but apparently you need a code to even open the app

Wouldn't a declining student population mean more money per student? And it seems like it would often (but not always) be cheaper to maintain existing buildings vs building new ones? I'm also wondering how much of the new suburban buildings are financed with debt, and the costs just haven't really caught up to them yet.

A school's budget is tied directly to attendance. Less students = less budget.

Nothing really to see here. Normal course of business, except maybe that reviewing all 55m systematically is gonna take a while with all the database joins you will have to do across disparate systems.

Just “watch” level for US west coast, but warning level for Hawaii and Alaska.

Air alarms are going off in Hawaii. Still a few hours away, but they are not joking around. Saying it can wrap around all the islands and hit anywhere

The intent may be also seen as pro-education: "they're free to protest elsewhere without annoying other students"

This you? What made your stance on this subject change?

How can you even have democracy without freedom of speech?
How can you freely choose who to vote without free exchange of information?

There are times you can politicize an issue. A flood that killed a bunch of young kids at a summer camp is not one of them.

Articles like this do more harm than good. Either you already believe climate change is an issue and this changes nothing, or you don’t and this looks like exactly the sort of politicization that a denier supposes the entire global warming issue to be. You gain no allies and you galvanize opponents. I wouldn’t care if it was ineffective but it’s actually destructive.

The article starts by blaming lack of personnel, then goes on to say this community gets warnings day and night and gets alarm fatigue. The real issue is “weather is horribly hard to predict”, but we don’t get to any of this before speculation about blame. Every word drips with desire to blame, and virtually no sorrow at the tragedy is to be found.

This is the same argument that is made after every single school shooting in America. How dare we seek solutions after tragedy. Lets just stick to thoughts and prayers

400 fake EPA miles is probably closer to 300 real world miles and a pretty nice range.

Some vehicles EPA miles are way off while others are spot on.

AFAIK, there are several reasons for the increase in autism diagnosis, but a few key ones people forgot about...

1. DSM IV, the old way, had a separate diagnosis for many autism related disorders. Think Asperger's, pdd-nos, etc. When DSM V was released, many separate diagnosis were umbrella'd in to autism spectrum disorder. The old disorders simply disappeared and are not made any more.

2. Getting an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis opens up a huge amount of insurance and educational leeway. You go from qualifying for general therapy to intensive support therapy, classes, and more. At school, with the diagnosis, you get expanded help for kids that are really struggling. So there is a strong will created by parents and educators to try to get that diagnosis. When you are struggling, this extra support can really help everyone, the kids, teachers, and parents.

These two points alone may account for a lot of the increases we are seeing. I don't know why they are never mentioned by media and the skeptics.
