Just making sure you’re aware of the size of California and New York. Yes - has a small chunk of very affluent residents, but also huge populations, loads of people living well below the poverty line, high percentage of undocumented workers (also likely living below the poverty line), and a huge mix of both urban and rural populations. Those rankings don’t strike me at all as odd.

Restaurants concentrate too hard on the things that are not food.

If a restaurateur and/or the head chef has any pretensions of greatness, then they must master two French dishes, Coq au Vin, and Boeuf Bourguignon.

Before investing in anything else, these are tollgates.

WorldWideWebb · 5 months ago
That’s complete rubbish. What of the sushi chef who has no knowledge or experience with French cuisine or someone who has mastered how to make a great taco? Would you not consider them masters of their craft, because I sure would.

This illustrates well why QR codes shouldn’t be a thing used in advertising (especially outdoor). It’s like picking up a random cup in a public place and drinking the contents.

Ok, I appreciate that timelines in this space are long. But the opening phrase:

"Toyota Motor Corporation (“Toyota”) and Waymo reached a preliminary agreement to explore a collaboration focused on accelerating the development..."

reads a bit like a parody of corporate speak about a project nowhere close to happening. Did they agree to deploy? Or reach an agreement to collaborate? No, that's too strong. They will EXPLORE collaborating on ACCELERATING development.

What would it take to give these poor children a Starlink connection?

Being indebted to Elon and the Orange Administration. Probably not the best solution to a problem like this.

I'd say at least the ~70M population of the uk would know it. Probably quite a few outside also

Moss used it in IT Crowd. That’s where I heard it first, and then looked up the origin.

A normal govvie sending cleared materials to unapproved recipients over unapproved channels? 20 years in federal prison.

A govvie with status doing the same? A slap on the wrist.

Embarrassing.

A Trump cabinet member doing the same? Not even a slap on the wrist.
WorldWideWebb commented on Canada considering charging for road access from USA to Alaska   washingtonstatestandard.c... · Posted by u/vinnyglennon

I've seen two apocalyptic North American scenarios in fiction, and have previously dismissed both as ridiculous.

1. In the Fallout universe, the USA annexes Canada

2. In at least two Neal Stephenson novels (Snowcrash and Termination Shock), the USA has collapsed.

I've never before thought that either of these would have a semi-realistic path to actually happening.

WorldWideWebb · 9 months ago
Also Snow Crash, the US consisting of many large, corpo-owned city states (also being discussed in the current news with techbros trying to start up their own self-regulated cities).

And here I am, having an ERP software at hand whose database I "should not query" with some (3-6) joins and likely in the 100'000s of records in total in the larger tables because "the DB server will go down".

So they wouldn’t put the power button on the back of the latest Mini, but they did on the Studio? That’s frustrating (yes, minor nit).
