Tesl commented on US Wholesale Inflation Rises by Most in 3 Years   bloomberg.com/news/articl... · Posted by u/master_crab

In November 2024, inflation was at 2.7%. Inflation for the whole year was 2.9%.

The public was so incensed that they threw out the government.

We all know Trump voters didn't give two shits about the price of eggs. That's not why they vote for him.

You know, in moments like these, you have an opportunity to build a connection — to meet someone in the middle who sees the world a little differently, who is perhaps indoctrinated into a disrespectful aspect of capitalism and is unable to see through it yet, or who perhaps offers a perspective you don’t have yourself.

And you slam dunk any chance of connection for what seems to be the sake of argument and posture. All because of a difference in opinion? Because you have the mighty all-seeing eyes of an objective opinion we should all see through too?

I “had” to know my response would get no love? The only mistake I made here is my continued thought that this was a place for some kind of industry togetherness: It is just a constant stepping over each other for no apparent reason than to satisfy a kind of unfulfilled ego.

I wasn’t concerned with how much you would love my response. I didn’t cater it for you. You are not the only person in my god damn universe. It was meant to be my authentic perspective, to be helpful, or to invite conversation and debate if I missed another perspective unhad.

But with responses like these, gosh, why bother? What a waste of my love.

I think the argument you made is just an entirely different one. The inequality in your argument is basically whether you should be compensated for interviewing with a company — which, I don’t know what’s economically fair there and I’m not making an argument about. I’d love to be paid to interview :) I don’t know the economic impact of it though. I wonder if it would just lead to more selective hiring practices and worser mutual fits.

Requesting payment for just the NDA is weird to me. Without something like this, you’re asking the company to provide detailed specifics of the role you’re interviewing for, but you won’t give them any legal peace that you won’t run away with the secrets you learn: It’s a free and permitted distribution of anything your interviewers go and share with candidates.

It leads to interviews where you have no idea what the role actually is and what you’ll be doing on the job. Every question stonewalled with a generic answer so the employee doesn’t get in trouble. An atmosphere of curation and inauthenticity, to gauge how you will potentially spend years of your life.

Lovely.

You should probably keep to LinkedIn for this kind of crap.

I know where the argument comes from, but at an extreme watching football with 22 folks running behind a ball in a slow game where 97% of the time nothing happens in terms of scoring, and in terms of tactics, today sounds like a handball game; it's boring (and I say that as a Brazilian and having attended more than 100+ in the stadium and more than 600 on TV).

The entertainment in the Olympic games is in the fact that those folks (especially track and field) go to the extreme and human limit. In other words, for regular sports entertainment, I can go to watch Green Bay Packers vs. Vikings or Chelsea vs. Manchester City; for olympic entertainment (athletes pushing to their limits), Olympics are the place to watch.

How do you pick a number as specific as 600? I have absolutely no idea how many football games I've ever watched.

If you know a way to pay someone across the world in seconds for cents in transaction fees, I’m open for alternatives.

I pay people globally through HSBC all the time. Works instantly.

I never understand this argument anyway. If you can't send funds instantly that isn't because the currently itself can't be transferred instantly - it's because for whatever reason you don't have access to a provider that will provide that service. That's a separate problem and can be solved without having to build an entirely new currency / financial system.

Tesl commented on Thoughts on low latency trading if exchanges went full cloud   blog.abctaylor.com/what-w... · Posted by u/arcza

Nice article. Wondering though why trading is not done in discrete batches, e.g. 5 second intervals? Trades in the same interval get filled equally or stochastically? Info about trades with that same 5 second batch delay? Is there some (theoretical) market efficiency thing at play? All this HFT feels wasteful and bad for 'regular' human investors.

This is how the Taiwan exchange used to do matching, and I still think it's the best system I've seen.

I don't think the reason has anything to do with price discovery, it's just because exchanges want to maximise their trading fees. Continuous order book trading leads to more trades and hence more profit for the exchange.

So you think anyone can get their trades reverted on the stock exchange if they ask nicely? Oopsie, I clicked the wrong button, now please revert the trade that lost me some money. If some get such preferential treatment it's clear cut case of corruption, you don't need to catch them with the proverbial smoking gun to know it

Still waiting for all this evidence of yours.

Much easier to just go by gut feeling though isn't it.

You engaged in no activity before ban? Just banned one day?

It's pretty scary all the horror stories one hears on HN along these lines. I wish some regulation would be imposed requiring some sort of approximation of "due process", so to speak, when this happens to people.

Tesl · 2 years ago
OP didn't say they engaged in no activity, they just didn't know why they got banned. OP probably did/said all sorts of things that would have justified it.

Anyway I've never felt it's a requirement to have a LinkedIn profile to get hired as a developer, so the post as a whole is strange to me.

Feels slow to me actually this week (also on trial). I wondered if it could be because I'm in Asia and if its faster from the US?
