> I find that this is often where the stupidity narrative can be born. I’ve always wondered why someone else’s success triggers such rage and anger in certain people and I think it probably all boils down to the fact that the patriarchal society we unfortunately live in has successfully brainwashed us all. We are still trained to hate women, to hate ourselves and to be angry at women if they step out of the neat little box that public perception has put them in. I think subconsciously people still believe there is only room for women to be a certain type of way and once they claim to be one way they better not DARE grow or change or morph into something else.

Nah it's nothing to do with women, it's simple jealousy. Everyone wants to be successful. If they can dismiss successful people as lucky or whatever (tbf some are) then it makes them feel better about their own failure to be successful (they are just as good; they just weren't as lucky).

A natural human tendency. Look at all the people saying Elon Musk isn't really an engineer. Yeah right, he definitely is heavily involved in the high level technical decisions. Yes he's an arsehole and moderately racist and probably quite lucky too but he is good at his job.

How’s that 2016 promise of LA to NYC autonomous driving goal going for Musk? Or his Cybercab venture going? And the decision to not use LIDAR in his vehicles? Or the Cybertruck’s dismal engineering and sales?

> The other problem is that making a really effective dating app is just hard. It's fundamentally difficult to help people find compatible partners, especially without in-person contact. That's compounded by cultural and demographic issues. It doesn't matter how well your app is designed when there's a massive imbalance in genders!

Really true. Most of dating seems to be dominated by that people want to be comfortable and dating is an inherently uncomfortable experience at times and many people seem to have a hard time with it.

I’m writing this as someone that made the conscious decision to face every form of uncomfortableness in dating if I noticed it was needed. Some people look at me bewildered with how I met my wife. They found what I did was way too much effort. But I am thinking to myself: you’re going to spend the most time with them! You better be damn sure that you’re long-term compatible.

Yet, enough people seem to act the whole process is more like buying something from your local Chipotle/<name your favorite establishment> where comfort is king.

Can you expand on what types of uncomfortableness you faced and what you mean by effort (to the point of bewildering people)? Curious what worked for you. Not sure if you just mean you forced yourself to go on a million dates and were super selective.

PyTorch is one of those tools that’s so simple and easy to take apart that you feel like you might’ve been able to make it yourself. I can’t imagine how much engineering effort was behind all those moments where I thought to myself, “of course it should work like that, how can it be any other way?”
TechnicolorByte · 3 months ago
Can anyone recommend a technical overview describing the design decisions PyTorch made that led it to win out?

I feel sorry for people like you who can't read an article such as this one without expressing rage at the current administration. Regardless of my political positions, I've come to learn that there are enough substantive, significant issues where bipartisan unity is a no-brainer, but those in power, with all of their self-interested agendas, profit from the people being at each other's throats.

We may disagree on carbon credits, but we nobody disagrees on having clean water, sustainable sources of energy, regulations on sanitation, waste, and pollution; affordable education; term limits and abolishing lobbyists. The list goes on.

Mellow out and focus on the substance without letting your TDS flare up.

Embarrassing comment. This current administration and its supporters most definitely does not agree on several of your points, in particular on sustainable sources of energy and regulations on pollution.

This is insane, wtf have you Trump voters done.

Plenty of them here before the election. Wish they’d speak up more now and explain how any of these policies are objectively good for the US economy and US citizens.

TechnicolorByte commented on San Francisco homelessness: Park ranger helps one person at a time   sfstandard.com/2025/02/08... · Posted by u/NaOH

Quoting a reddit comment:

> Wow, this is almost a parody. An able-bodied meth addict and convicted felon was illegally living in a public park for 20 years, littering the land around him and forcing rangers to spend countless time and resources cleaning up the mess he left behind, making regular emergency room visits due to his unhealthy lifestyle costing the city hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, constantly doing illegal drugs while not holding down a job and suspiciously acquiring new supplies for his encampment after every sweep (how much do you want to be he engages in illegal activity), and giving an extremely hard time to caseworkers and HHS staff who already have a busy workload (including leaving/getting kicked out of housing multiple times). That one Golden Gate Park Dweller has probably cost the city millions of dollars over the last few years while consuming valuable time from caseworkers and park rangers who could be helping someone else (they're already overloaded). Not to mention the potential damage to the park's environment caused by his littering. What this guy needs is outpatient mental health treatment, and it's honestly criminal that our country has basically no resources for people with mental illness and shoves them into jail or shelters without treating their underlying problems.

Reopen mental institutions and enable forced is institutionalization. Engage this at the federal level. So sick of this crap.

These “homeless” are not the kind who need clean clothes and shelter and some help getting a job. They want to live like this at the expense of the public’s money and enjoyment of public amenities.

Happy New Years, y’all!

Curious to hear if anyone has any specific goals/resolutions/things they’re especially looking forward to in 2025.

This is like Saudi Arabia pretending to say 'good riddance' to oil. What are you going to do when it's all gone?
TechnicolorByte · a year ago
Comparing X, which is one company (with a far reduced headcount and much smaller revenues compared to pre-Elon) in a tech hub city to an entire oil industry in an oil-rich state seems beyond hyperbolic.
