Smar commented on 'Right-to-Compute' Laws May Be Coming to Your State This Year   vktr.com/ai-ethics-law-ri... · Posted by u/ohjeez

The goals of this law:

"So, hypothetically, in a state with a right-to-compute law on the books, any bill put forward to limit AI or computation, even to prevent harm, could be halted while the courts worked it out. That could include laws limiting data centers as well.

“The government has to prove regulation is absolutely necessary and there’s no less restrictive way to do it,” Wilcox said. “Most oversight can’t clear that bar. That’s the point. Pre-deployment safety testing? Algorithmic bias audits? Transparency requirements? All would face legal challenge. "

My take: This sounds incredibly pro-industry and anti-democratic.

And scary. Really scary.

People were already careless with social media which was openly public. I imagine it’ll be worse with these LLMs for the average person.

This is the real risk I think. Currently there are no means to even pretend to get anything deleted from LLMs either.

For some weird reason I thought this was about Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451.

So what does it do? In the discussion yesterday no one covered that.

From what this article says it is an app (which fits with how it is displayed in the screenshot), which suggests you would need to choose to open it to actually have it do anything.

It should at least do its core function: collect data.

“It's redundant to say "I think" at any point in an opinion piece.”

“But is there still value in human produced writing? Subjectively, yes. Objectively? I'm not sure. I think there's a lot of personal value in writing though.”

There is value because I felt compelled to engage, but if it turns out you’re a bot then I’ll feel cheated and less likely to read other blog posts.

I think it is not redundant - it gives emphasis for a guess, to make sure reader won't mix it up with other things that may be verified to be truthy.
Smar commented on Why did Crunchyroll's subtitles just get worse?   animebythenumbers.substac... · Posted by u/zdw

Why is this getting pushed up so fiercely? It seems all of the issues are for dubs and their closed captions. CC users are a very minor target group. Deaf can just use proper subs.

I have seen no issues in regular subs, and they look like they always have looked.

My company’s security and legal are super paranoid and cannot be convinced to let us use it. So already it’s a dead deal
Smar · 4 months ago
Realists, not paranoid. The threats are very real, and even very probable at this stage.

Well, it’s weird to say this, but good for Microsoft. The UK is turning into an Orwellian state.
