Maybe there should be some sort of Uber type app here. Say super uber, which arranges the whole trip. Say you first get ride to somewhere. And then you are transferred to next leg of trip. And then after that is done, one or more legs to final destination. Some of these could be car rides, rikshaws, walking, even private yatchs or small scale sail-ships. Just imagine what would be possible with AI backend and LLM to automate whole thing!

Maybe you could also have ChatGPT book a hotel for you too at that point
Shawnj2 commented on Ask HN: Windows/Linux software that has no real equivalent on macOS?    · Posted by u/fastily

Industry-specific applications often run only on Windows: Small organizations make them, limiting capacity to support more platforms, and their clients are businesses and therefore usually use Windows. For example, I'd expect that most software for running accountants' offices would run only on Windows.

A big exception is vendor-hosted browser-based software, which can run on more platforms. Some features could still be Windows-only. Another exception is phone-based software.

Yeah one example is you can’t run Altium on macOS. You can run eagle which is similar but not the same thing as altium and has no compatibility with it.

Would everyone agree with that definition, though? It seems like discussions around DEI tend to go in circles, because proponents see bad implementations as not really DEI, and opponents see good implementations as not really DEI either.

I recently read in the local news that some city department, in order to comply with anti-DEI stuff, was changing its name to remove the word 'diversity'... and nothing else. DEI has no legal definition. It feels like the new "woke", where the actual meaning is irrelevant, and its only real purpose is tribalistic social signalling.

Shawnj2 · 3 months ago
By accepting the grant they are giving themselves a legal responsibility to “not do DEI” where the government arbitrarily decides what DEI is. Even something like employing a trans software engineer or talking about the impact Python is having in POC communities could be considered reason to go after PSF legally or rescind the grant. It’s just not worth the risk for the reward.

it's unique, and it's not even that bad. you shouldn't compare this to the apple watches of the world when the screen itself could display 64 colours at best (monochrome at worst). the design language should line in perfectly with those from the pebble os. it's supposed to be quirky, not liking the looks of it just means you're not the target audience.
Shawnj2 · a year ago
It's not the worst but the original Pebble Time Steel looks better IMO. I understand why they used a simpler case design (They don't have the resources to make anything like the PTS) but I still like the PTS design more. Maybe someone will come out with a custom case or something idk

Night workers or shift workers would have a different take on it. They’d be the ones posting in your area maybe?
Shawnj2 · a year ago
I mean night workers also don’t get to do other traditional evening events like go to a concert or bar so this doesn’t bother me. Night workers in nearby time zones would be able to use it either before or after their shift depending on their location

At the extreme level of “regional”, that’s Nextdoor.
Shawnj2 · a year ago
Sure but Nextdoor is still a huge business trying to reach the widest possible audience of local areas. Something limited by if you’re awake when it’s up is different IMO

It's an interesting idea, but if it's only open at a convenient time for a particular group, it's going to lack diverse and worldwide perspectives, and those are important for building a welcoming ecosystem. I doubt giving each timezone its own 3 hours would work, but perhaps rotating the 3 hours each day so that it's anchored on a different timezone would encourage that diversity of content and perhaps even encourage creating connections across timezones.

That said, if you've had success with it in a friend group, perhaps that suggests it's a nice mechanism for a group chat app, rather than for a public social media site?

Shawnj2 · a year ago
I kind of like the idea of a regional social media app which literally doesn’t work in other parts of the world. It makes the space a little more special than something trying to reach everyone IMO

He has his ear for now, but he can just as easily become his scapegoat. He burned his leftist supporters for good; I agree his position isn't a weak one but I think its best to reserve judgement on whether his moves (->right->X->DOGE) were a smart play or his downfall.

Very interesting. This longevity aspect frequently comes up in the Wii U modding community. It is tempting to plug in a simple USB stick to store the game files, but, because of the intense read/write nature, it is deemed to be prone to failure. Recently use of high-endurance SD cards has grown, but some say it is still not as safe as an external HDD. It would be interesting to hear thoughts from someone more experienced about the safest storage option as the last thing you want is for your save files to get corrupted.
Shawnj2 · a year ago
Considering SSD prices have crashed it’s the only way to go IMO, it solves literally all of the problems with other iptions like power draw for hard drives and longevity and speed over flash drives

Define massively. I think a 2024 M3 has ~20% better range than a 2018 M3. 2018 was the second year of the M3. The 2018 LR version still had a ~300mile range. No doubt future generations will be better but again, I don't think we will have a case that "dooms" the current generation of EVs, they will serve their primary purpose well until EOL.
Shawnj2 · a year ago
There’s other big changes like the current model 3 has a heat pump and the 2018 one doesn’t
