Sry to say but the fact that you argue with LLMs never become AGI, you are not up-to-date.

People don't assume LLM will be AGI, people assume that World Models will lead us to AGI.

I personally never asumed LLM will become AGI, i always assumed that LLM broke the dam for investment and research into massivce scale compute ML learning and LLMs are very very good in showing were the future goes because they are already so crazy good that people can now imagine a future were AGI exists.

And that was very clear already when / as soon as GPT-3 came out.

The next big thing will probably be either a LOT more RL or self propelling ai architecture discovery. Both need massive compute to work well but then will potentially provide even faster progress as soon as humans are out of the loop.

Are OpenAI or Anthropic et al seriously building towards “world models”? I haven’t seen any real evidence of that. It seems more like they are all in on milking LLMs for all they are worth.

Not really that surprising.

Authoritarianism has its draw backs obviously but one of its more efficient points is it can get things done if the will is at the top. Since China doesnt have a large domestic oil supply like the US it is a state security issue to get off oil as fast as possible.

It’s become clear that some form of top down total technocratic control like China has implemented is essential for pushing humanity forward.

It is not losing money, the whole industry haven't figured out how to generate revenue yet. it is the starting phase of LLM like we experienced in .com bubble. Is it a bubble at this point? Yes. Can it generate revenue in the future? Yes. Will openAI survive in this bubble? Maybe.
SalmoShalazar · 18 days ago
It is quite literally losing money at an unsustainable rate. They need a path to profitability otherwise this is a massive boondoggle for all of the investors

This is extremely important work thank you for sharing it. We are in the process of giving up our own moral standing in favor of taking on the ones imbued into LLMs by their creators. This is a worrying trend that will totally wipe out intellectual diversity.
SalmoShalazar · a month ago
Okay let’s calm down a bit. “Extremely important” is hyperbolic. This is novel, sure, but practically jailbreaking an LLM to say naughty things is basically worthless. LLMs are not good for anything of worth to society other than writing code and summarizing existing text.

On the other hand we have DeepMind / Demis Hassabis, delivering:

* AlphaFold - SotA protein folding

* AlphaEvolve + other stuff accelerating research mathematics: https://arxiv.org/abs/2511.02864

* "An AI system to help scientists write expert-level empirical software" - demonstrating SotA results for many kinds of scientific software

So what's the "fantasy" here, the actual lab delivering results or a sob story about "data workers" and water?

I’m not sure you understand what AGI is given the citations you’ve provided.

Inclusive of idiocy?

Software quality has been on a downhill trend that's steepened noticeably in the past ~15 years. Doesn't take a genius to put two and two together and see what's really happening but they'd rather we ignore the politically inconvenient elephant in the room.

Your downvotes don't matter, we see the truth regardless.

Please put two and two together for the rest of us clowns who can’t quite figure it out. State your beliefs plainly so we can come up with some solutions.

When did "woke" - i.e. "awake and not closing ones eyes to the problems in the world" become some sort of slur ? What does it say about people that use it as such?
SalmoShalazar · a month ago
I can’t remember the exact date. It’s all part of a “tradition” since at least the 90s. First things were PC, then there were SJWs, then woke, then DEI. Who knows what they will call it next. It’s always complaining about the same thing, just with new verbiage.

The author says this about smoking:

> If you smoke, don’t. It’s going to kill you.

And then this about alcohol:

> I think it’s unreasonable to tell people not to drink alcohol if they like it.

Why is it unreasonable to tell people not to drink alcohol, but reasonable to tell people to stop smoking? Shouldn't the smoking section also get a "at least make sure it’s really good tobacco that you enjoy and don’t smoke too much of it"?

It seems like the personal preferences (don't like smoking, but does like alcohol) is getting in the way of their medical-but-not-medical advice, instead of being able to apply their recommendations equally regardless of what they personally like.

SalmoShalazar · a month ago
The inconvenient truth that the vast majority of adults refuse to acknowledge is that there is no safe level of alcohol. Any drink is going to damage you, marginal though it may be. Unfortunately the healthiest thing you can do is simply never drink alcohol.

Kind of an odd move to pepper the HN thread on Dick Cheney’s death with non-sequitur comments about “the left”
