I remember having AltaVista as my primary bookmark, until they accelerated the ads and monetization, and render it almost completely useless. It was so obvious they wanted to make quick, obscene money from of it. They cared very little about the negative impact that had on user experience. That's why AltaVista went like the dodo. Period.

I'm still gobsmacked about the specific geological knowledge and application here turning into a very precise and relatively small search area.

It seems like EFF fought for youtube-dl and GitHub used their letter as legal firepower to bring the repo back online. If GitHub were fighting for the developer they would have funded the attorney, right? Though from their blog post it does look like they are taking steps to fund defense in the future as well as other steps to improve the situation.

Reading EFFs claim is pretty interesting, they state that saving a copy of a video is only one function of youtube-dl. I think the biggest problem is the name is called "youtube download", it is sort of difficult to downplay that saving a copy is only one function when the name implies it is the main purpose of the program.

RoutinePlayer · 5 years ago
Honestly, the name is problematic. Why do some developers insist on bad names? Stop the bad names .. unpronounceable crap like xoyx-mp4, zycx10 should also be avoided .. what's wrong with vidl, or something simple like that? .. I'm half joking, but it's worth underscoring.

Honestly, people who don't use their computers as Facebook machines or have very specific things they want to do with the ML engine should probably stay away from Arm Macs for a couple years. There's bound to be plenty of software that doesn't work or doesn't work well, Docker will have ~limited usefulness until more and more people publish Arm images, etc. Plus I'm waiting for the typical Apple move of screwing early adopters by announcing that next year's model is 3x as fast, $200 cheaper, etc.

Such a good point. I wonder how many folks don't actually realize there's a different ecosystem for Docker x86 and ARM images.

Stopped reading after "Liberals" in the subtitle. Writer assumes that liberals, the most internally diverse of the political classes, are a monolithic group :-( Many liberals have already pointed out the reasons why many working-class folks flocked to Trump. Had Dennis Sanders used "Establishment Democrats", I may have read further.
