Anyone that thinks Netflix buying WB would be better than the Ellisons knows nothing about the media business. Look at what James Cameron said about it last week, everyone prefers the Ellisons over Netflix because Netflix actively wants to kill the theatrical and physical media businesses

Mainstream physical media is already dead.

>People think that when you become vegan you have to give up lots of food. It’s true that I stopped eating animals but the number of different species I eat has grown considerably. This is because meat-eaters tend to eat the same few species of animals over and over again – pigs, cows, chickens. Whereas there are some 20,000 species of edible plants in the world.

I was vegetarian for 10 years until around COVID. I often want to go back to vegetarianism, not for ethical or health reasons, just for the sheer diversity of what I ate and the fun of cooking with limitations.

Many things need to be understood to be appreciated.

For instance music: we tend to like what we know, and what we know is what we hear on the radio/everywhere we go. When people tell me they don't like jazz, I always find a jazz song they like. If they say they don't like rap music, I can always find one they like. Why? Maybe because it's closer to what they already understand (making it more accessible), or maybe it has been very popular and so they've already heard it countless times (in night clubs, on the radio, ...). Most people who dislike a whole music genre generally don't really understand it and haven't put any effort into it.

You don't like churches? Go to Notre-Dame in Paris, and have someone explain to you its architecture. How they built it, how you can date the parts of the church just from its architecture.

Don't get me wrong: it's possible to dislike stuff, and it's alright. But it's worth trying to understand before disliking.

As bonus trivia, depiction of Bilbo was based on the "short, round stature, expressive eyes, broad and open face" of the famous Soviet actor Yevgeniy Leonov (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yevgeny_Leonov).

In this video Leonov mentions this fact before reading an excerpt from the book: https://youtu.be/z7hEJxTBsTs

That's the most Hobbit-looking man I ever seen.

It's crazy that people here have memories from when they were toddlers while I'm 29 and have a hard time remembering stuff from my early teens.

Having a connected display gives advertisers a huge amount of control that they desire.

Being able to control the time of day that your ad is shown is a pretty big deal. Being able to edit or take down a poorly considered ad campaign very quickly is also a pretty big deal. Coordinating paper ads and other media is tricky, because the companies that manage the advertising display inventory only have so many workers and therefore only so much capacity to do changes.

Sounds like a real headache. Maybe we should get rid of this whole advertising thing.

This is both very funny and very sad :)

Paper is its own thing. if you think about it, the todo list in the computer was first a skeuomorph of the paper one. Now people have become so alienated from the paper that someone has brought their computer todo to the paper :))))

Not only this does not promote the paper, but is a huge promotion for the computer! By being a constant reminder to the notebook's owner: "this is not a computer", one will have no choice but to keep thinking of all the things they miss in their todo from a dynamic medium :))))

>A skeuomorph is a derivative object that retains ornamental design cues (attributes) from structures that were necessary in the original.

Thanks for the new word !

Funny to learn this word today. Stuff have been pretty rough for me these past few month and I have been unknowingly practicing ataraxia. Problems (at least mine) are temporary, instead of lamenting I should stay cool and enjoy what I have, preparing for the better days. It's truly liberating.
