> I don't have a clear idea of what they even do. IT consulting firm?

They do do some IT consulting, among other things, but the vast majority of their workforce is providing cheap sales & support staff to FAANG companies - these companies are famous for having well-remunerated staff, with generous benefits, hired through protracted interview processes. In reality most people actually working on their products are hired cheaply through vendors like Accenture and Cognizant.

Content moderation is another one - farm it off to an external entity like Accenture to manage and you are at arms length from putting some poor content moderator in front of some pretty disturbing content.

Good.

For those that haven't watched them yet, there are 3 John Oliver segments on the subject that will back up the "Good." statement:

The first time we booked a place on Booking.com, we were anxious the entire afternoon. Not sure if things have changed, but at that time they made it feel like a racing game, flashy countdowns, everything but THAT place sold out in the area, OTHER PEOPLE WERE LOOKING AT IT, several email notifications in the span of hours because we haven't decided yet, and now it might be TOO LATE if we refresh the page.

I wouldn't want to shop on that site ever again, they have no respect for their users.

I appreciate the fact that Redwood World finds it necessary to include a page slamming people who believe that you can't enjoy trees unless they're locally native.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not?

> Perhaps the Giant Redwood is an ideal tree to re-introduce as we are told that our climate is beginning to return to these types of conditions.

One of the justifications for reintroduction of Redwoods is a real gem.

Seems to work well based on a quick trial on the web site.

Annoying that I seem to have to download the app to see how much it costs.

> There's no good evidence that adults have more difficulty acquiring language than children.

This kind of rocked me, because in my experience, kids have a clear and obvious advantage compared to adults. They can completely passively acquire a language, phonology and grammar, with no training, in a matter of 5 years or so. And that's completely passively, no education, no effort.

I totally buy that you can turn an adult into a fluent speaker. And I get that it's good for your business to show adults that it's not impossible. But it's like a million times easier for kids, isn't it?

PMan74 · 5 years ago
> in a matter of 5 years or so

Wouldn't anybody master a language in 5 years? I'm assuming you're talking about a situation where you are immersed in the language.

Cryptos have become more like a cult than actual tech. Don't get me wrong, some of them are legitimate but try pointing out their deficiencies in their communities and you'll get attacked from all angles. Most people involved in crypto aren't there for the tech, they only care about money they are making from it.

(And there's no judgement in that, if you make a living selling fridge freezers it doesn't mean you have to care much about fridge freezers)

I find this both reassuring and terrifying. It's reassuring because if life was completely wiped out on the planet there would be trillions of seeds waiting for the right conditions to germinate and repopulate the Earth with life.

It's terrifying because why would this have evolved?

Sowing wildflowers is becoming more popular here in Ireland. You can buy wildflower mixes or seed bombs but the expert view is to just stop mowing, there are enough dormant seeds in the soil. And those that are present are generally more suitable to the local environment than anything you'd introduce.

Reassuring as you say.

This is really cool. From where are they sourcing this data?

And on the Jan 2021 top US domestic routes, what's up with those Atlanta to Ft Lauderdale/Miami/Tampa/Orlando routes? We're only partly through the month so that maybe that's why they are listed but still, I was surprised.

PMan74 · 5 years ago
OAG aggregate timetable data from airlines and distribute that aggregated feed.

You'll note their data is "seats" not "passengers" i.e. if an A380 flies from London to Dubai they count that as 525 seats as opposed to however many people took the flight.
