Mimu commented on Ask HN: Why does everyone bash Trump? Seriously    · Posted by u/vsergiu

I don't like Trump... but the guy made billions ... even tho some people will argue that he avoided paying taxes and other stuff.

Still... he is not stupid, he will not go bananas. I think there will be economic growth in America. Hopefully less corruption and no terrorism. Look at Europe... they have the "open mindset" approach and there are more problems there than anywhere in the world (regarding politics, terrorism and common people not being happy)

I believe Trump inherited his billions and actually lost money overall so he didn't made any $$.
Mimu commented on Ask HN: What happens to people who graduate and can't find an entry job?    · Posted by u/greyostrich

I'm not the best developer but I never had any issues during interview except when I didn't want the job. Damn I'm even stammering but still looks like it goes well most of the time. Big note, I'm from the EU, interviewed in France and UK (London), none of them had big technical steps like in the US (from what I read here), nor a billion steps.

Why? I think (I didn't analyze anything) that is because I'm just being myself. I talk to the interviewer like it's a friend. If I think of a joke I just say it. Thoughts like "will be it ok if", "should I say this or that", etc NEVER cross my mind. I'm having a conversation, not a test. Same for technical stuff, if I don't know something I just say I don't know. Hopefully I still have an idea, so I would say something like "I don't know this / never used that, but my first guess would be X", then usually it ends up being a discussion that at the very last would teach me something, even if I don't get the job.

That being said, I understand it's hard to do stuff like that if this is not your default mindset and you are being close to desperate.

I'll never understand comparing code to art. Not the first time I'm seeing it but for me it couldn't be further apart.

There is no best way to make a drawing. There is no best way to make a movie. There is no best way to tell a story. There is no best way to make a painting. There is no best way to create a song. ... There is (almost?) always a best way to do a piece of code. Code has nothing to do with emotions. I'm not trolling I truly don't get it, like at all.

Listen, you have no right to someone's else own work. If you don't want to pay HBO NOW to watch a single TV show. No problem. If you do however pirate their show, then that's stealing and the owner has a right to call you a thief. If HBO decides to charge $1,000 per episode, that would be very outrageous, but that still doesn't give anyone the right to steal their show. BTW, I know the pain, I really want to watch Showtime's "Billions" but I'm not willing to pay $12.95 for one month to watch it. I pay for Netflix and all my shows is restricted to Netflix, youtube and what's on TV.

You make me think about that commercial you couldn't skip on DVD. "YOU WOULDN'T STEAL A CAR" Bitch if I could copy a car on street for free I would do it.

Not to mention the only people seeing that fucking clip were the ones that bought the DVD. Way to ensure returning customers, well done.

Mimu commented on Ask HN: How many of you actually identify yourself as hackers? If so, why?    · Posted by u/type0

When I saw people saying stuff like "hacking a salad" I considered this term lost forever. Putting food together is not hacking a salad people, it's literally making one.
Mimu commented on ‘Ghostbusters’ Is a Perfect Example of How Internet Movie Ratings Are Broken   fivethirtyeight.com/featu... · Posted by u/thampiman

The new ghostbusters movie looks awful - it's not a thing about women leads, it's that it looks really bad in a way the original isn't. I know that's subjective, but watch the trailer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3ugHP-yZXw

Just bad.

There are a lot of bad movies, but this one walks around in the corpse of a much loved and nostalgic intellectual property that a bunch of people wanted. They got that.

Is this really about sexism?

This pattern has shown up a lot recently when an intellectual property is used by something that the original audience doesn't fit into (e.g. the last fable game that got canceled). It's a pretty silly use of an IP - the original audience is where the value comes from.

The movie looks really bad but as someone who saw the movie, it's actually pretty good and funny. The quatuor works perfectly, there is no feminism message at all, it's just a good comedy.

Maybe it won't be your type of humor, but this is not a bad movie in any way. People are just rating the movie without seeing it, which is pretty stupid in the first place. Because of that I expect the score to be much higher, hopefully a lot of people won't listen to the haters and see for themselves.

Mimu commented on Ask HN: What's a better way to digest regular/tech news?    · Posted by u/coned88
Mimu · 9 years ago
I never understood people's issue with news. I don't read any newspapers, I don't read any news-sites, I literally read titles of /r/worldsnews (knowing that most of them are clickbaits, but still) and that's it.

I don't think I'm missing anything, the relevant news come to you one way or another. Yes you'll have it like a day later but who cares? In the meantime you are free to do stuff.

Mimu commented on French kids know how to play   salon.com/2016/05/28/fren... · Posted by u/bootload

In books and news articles, France often plays the foil to America, just as it once did to England. The French language serves as a sign of socio-economic distinction, a class marker, and for its disciples, it is probably easy to think that French ways are superior in everything from cooking to flirtation to parenthood.

Americans moving to France in search of a more sophisticated lifestyle are confronted with a stagnating economy, a society riven by inequality and racism, and a cuisine in many ways inferior to that of the US, Germany or other countries embracing fresh and organic good.

After an initial lost period, these American immigrants make careers out of France itself, trading off its pre-war reputation. "French women don't get fat", "Why French Parents Are Superior", "Bringing Up Bebe" and "La Seduction: How the French Play the Game of Life" -- these are all real works published by people monetizing their lifestyle choices by preaching French superiority to those they have left behind.

Unfortunately, none of it is true. I spent 14 years in Paris, enough time to gauge the average weight of French womanhood and watch many French parents strut their stuff. France is becoming heavier and heavier as fast foods make deeper inroads. And French parenting is often a hystrionic affair that verges on verbal abuse when applied to toddlers. It's shocking, actually.

So these articles simply use France as a rhetorical trope to introduce new ideas to American society. Those ideas should be considered independently of the distortions applied to France itself. In fact, someone should build an app that substitutes the word "Utopia" for France in those articles. It will clear the mind and steer the reader clear of the many impasses in which French society is stuck.

Letting children play freely is hardly a new idea lol. I won't comment the cuisine and racism thing, daily reminder that the US police is murdering black people on the street (and on camera for added entertainment).

Still I agree with you that France is becoming more and more like the US and that worries me because I definitely think it is NOT the way to go at all.

Try to figure out how they do it, and feed them with porn and anti chinese propaganda. If they do it manually then pray for them because they have a shitty life.

One of the story in the comments is awesome (from jakob). Dude got unleashed to a client without the necessary knowledge, client got angry and asked for a replacement, a senior came and actually teach the junior. I expected the story to end poorly and it actually was a great happy ending. Would read again.
