Maximus9000 commented on The ROI of Exercise   herman.bearblog.dev/exerc... · Posted by u/ingve

If you’re struggling with exercise and with getting it into a routine, I can’t recommend standalone, wireless VR enough. It was fun and engaging enough to keep me coming back without feeling that I was doing a boring chore, and nearly every game has you moving, with the exception of the flying and driving sims.

Imagine fighting ninjas and dodging bullets as your workout. You can literally get that and more with VR.

It was my gateway back into fitness.

Maximus9000 · 3 days ago
Can you recommend any specific games that meet these requirements? I don't have VR, but I remember playing "Super hot VR" and getting a surprisingly good workout from that game.

Wear different size shoes and put them on the wrong foot. Your brain will be struggling to have a consistent gait
Maximus9000 · 5 days ago
This might fool the gait analysis, but they will come up with more metrics to analyze you by. You can't beat it. IMO, the only way to stop this is government

The article would be better if the author replaced "smartphone" with "smartphone screen". A ton of activities are made better by smartphones - a walk or a run with podcast or music, a drive or a bike ride with navigation, etc. It's specifically the screen that takes 100% of your attention and prevents you from daydreaming.
Maximus9000 · 4 months ago
Some audio is poor for daydreaming though. Audiobooks and podcasts often require attention (some music too).

> hostile government

I don't recall us being at war or anything with China. For example, most of our crap is made there and shipped here with barely a look. If China were truly hostile and combative like everyone claims, they could literally import bombs and spies via those means.

Is this just the Red Scare 2.0? I've had way more issue with American oligarchs and politicians fucking over America's values and our way of life than China in the past few years/decades, that is for sure.

If buying a plastic toilet bowl cleaner, I don't care where it comes from. If buying a 5G network equipment, we do care. Most of the stuff we buy from China is plastic junk.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri:

"As the Americans learned so painfully in Earth's final century, free flow of information is the only safeguard against tyranny. The once-chained people whose leaders at last lose their grip on information flow will soon burst with freedom and vitality, but the free nation gradually constricting its grip on public discourse has begun its rapid slide into despotism. Beware of he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master."

Google the phase "flood the zone with shit". Your strategy only works if most of the people speaking/writing are genuinely trying to make the world a better place. If state actors are trying to flood the zone with anything and everything, then it becomes impossible for John Everyman to distinguish signal from noise.
Maximus9000 commented on A new dental scam is to pull healthy teeth to sell you expensive fake ones   arstechnica.com/health/20... · Posted by u/pjmlp

This might sound stupid but I refuse to go to dentists that have "too nice" of an office.

Over the years I have lived in several places and had a variety of dentists and one common theme that sticks with me, the nicer and higher tech the office is, the more procedures they are going to recommend you. They need to pay for the equipment and office somehow.

I've had one dentist say I need 3 cavities filled. That I needed laser treatments, extra cleanings, etc. They made it sound like my teeth were going to fall out of my head. I was going to Brazil in a few months and so i decided to wait until I was there to get the work done.

The dentists there took xrays, etc and didn't find any problems. I even went to another dental clinic and the same thing. They had no idea what that dentist thought was wrong.

When I came back to the states i went to another dentist. Instead of being on a top floor with an army of technicians and the fanciest machines like the first one, this dentist had a small older office. He did the cleanings himself and again he found no problems and told me I had very healthy mouth and gums.

This has happened to me before when i went away to college my childhood dentist said I had cavities that I needed to fill. When i got to college and went to the dentist there, they couldn't find a problem.

You'd love mine. Their x-ray machine is still rocking windows Vista - and that machine is definitely plugged into the internet. With that said, I like them as a dentist.

I remember seeing a sell by date on salt. It was at that moment that I started questioning the process.

I've seen it on vinegar too.

There is lots of things were competition is ahead of them or things they could improve:

- 90W fast wired charging, 80W wireless charging - many android phone have it

- reverse charging - so that in emergency when you forgot to charge airpods and you already outside you could charge a little bit enough for a run - again some androids have it

- stylus support - still would be nice to get apple pencil for some signatures etc

- fingerprint reader either under display or on side button like on ipad air - sometimes when phone is sitting on the table it's easier to unlock with finger than pick it up and point at your face then put it back (especially annoying for iOS devs)

- irda led for controlling air con in hotel - they have already IR blaster on front and maybe even on lidar that they could potentially hack it similar like they hacked screen for flash.

- temperature sensor and humidity sensor

- IR temperature sensor for checking your body temperature or stuff you baking in the oven

- tiny thermal camera sensor for inspecting leaks in house for the winter

- microsd support (yes can dream can I?)

- any improvements for lidar quality or truedepth

- another programmable button on the left side for lefties

- 250GB storage by default

- 12GB RAM

- bluetooth 5.4

- thread protocol support like HomePod

We’re at a point where regular users already have everything they need, from any model in the past few years.
Maximus9000 · a year ago
As a regular user, I'd still like 10x optical zoom
