>>How can you know if your yellow sweets are coloured with lead chromate?

Well because if they are then eventually someone will get sick, they will sue the company, the company will have to pay millions in damages, and it will have to stop using lead in their sweets, which will scare every other company away from trying to do the similar thing /s

> In the modern era of low-cost drones and missiles, all surface ships are sitting ducks

This is a blip. Anti-ship missiles were expensive and sophisticated so we had expensive, sophisticated defeneses.

Drones disrupted that calculus for a minute. Now low-cost anti-drone technologies are being deployed. There is a reason the world's largest navies are building ships at a record clip.

Destroyed by who - the US or Taiwan? If by Taiwan, IMO it is extremely unlikely. Scorched earth tactics have only been used by the most bitter, determined combatants in a conflict, who are expecting a long protracted war. The cutting edge chips have enormous economic value but virtually no immediate or even medium term military value to China (the time it would take to design and start using them in hardware is years at least).

There exists a third possibility where the US and China sign an under the table deal for China to invade, the US to saber rattle and China to allow the flow of chips to continue. The present direction seems to be the US is "de-risking" from Taiwan by moving chip production to the US, so if China does invade they aren't caught in a bind.

But taiwan has nukes now in all but name? As the us becomes a non-reliable ally everyone with money and a shopping list bordering a totalitarian country heads for Pakistan ?

> But Chinese citizens know the US exists?

of course, but the US is not mostly composed of chinese people.

It is common belief in china that the state governance by the CCP is doing good for the country, and the proof is economic progress, material wealth and geopolitical strength.

Geopolitical strength ? Its a comon theme they want to emulate the british empire colonial model worldwide ,seeing it as what started the century of humiliation . Change by trade indeed.

At a former company, we were all issued YubiKey Nanos, which just never worked for me. None of my coworkers had a problem, but I couldn’t get the damn thing to register a touch no matter what I did, including swapping keys. Eventually I came across a thread on an internal list for employees over forty, with several other people who were all having the same problem. The solution? Lick your finger. Gross, but it did the trick. And I’m stuck licking my finger every time I need to make a YubiKey work.

one of the quickest ways to ruin the way an established boat plan 'swims' is by adding a tall rig after de-masting.

it's extremely enticing to 'add more sail' to a boat in order to squeeze more speed out of it, or achieve easier lufting.

turns out that marine architecture is a lot harder than one thinks at first glance, and just about everyone that tries to tweak specs afterwards does so in such a way that makes the boat categorically worse.

(don't ask me how I came to realize this after many dollars spent)

A 5k drone can destroy a 5M tank, but the US defense establishment would never settle for a 5k drone. Instead there will be a decade+ long procurement process, resulting in a much more expensive drone.

That then is delivered and not used in the warzone. Its to expensive dor the front,it belongs into a museum .

This kind of rain/flooding happens every 10-20 years in the region :(. Varies a bit with its intensity, but pretty much everyone has lived through at least one. (Lived 13 years near Dénia, 100km from Valencia)

Trauma:

It's something one yells while inflicting it on others, the ultimate ego trip, society, the group be damned, the battleflag of the church of the holy individuals. In dramatis ego sum. A most peculiar nation of islands. They have a disease there, they make uncured ham from.
