> I'm going to call out the WP article as being factually wanting on that point.

No, it's not. What is factually wanting is any case of an actual tomb honey.

When I looked into it, every single supposed tomb honey, not already debunked by Leek, deadends in a useless citation which is 'someone somewhere once found tomb honey trust me bro'. Clearly made-up. They don't exist.

The burden of proof is on anyone who still believes in tomb honey to name a single specific verified instance, with time and place and tomb, and someone actually witnessing it and analyzing or eating it and proving it's honey, rather than several other possible residues like the Leek examples. Otherwise, it's just more telephone game nonsense.

(Note: the Leek PDF is unfortunately not working right now, because Hetzner has temporarily disabled my account over torrenting alerts.)

Hey hetzner. I am just a 16 year old boy (technically I am turning 17 on 2nd july haha but I want nothing from ya haha) who has heard great things about your service while being affordable but never have tried them because I guess I just don't have a credit card/I guess I am a really frugal person at this moment haha. I was just reading one of your own documents if I feel correct and it said that the support isn't the best(but I guess I was wrong)

I guess I will try out nix on hetzner for sure one day. This is really cool!!! Thanks! I didn't expect you to respond. This is really really cool. You made my day to whoever responded with this. THANKS A LOT KATIE. LOTS OF LOVE TO HETZNER. MAY YOU BE THE WAY YOU ARE, SINCE Y'ALL ARE PERFECT.

Hetzner_OL · 2 months ago
Hi again, I'm happy that I made your day! You seem pretty easy to please if that is all it takes. Keep in mind that customers must be 18 years old. I believe that is a legal requirement here in Germany, where we are based. Until then, if you're a fan, maybe you'd enjoy seeing what we're up to. We're on YouTube, reddit, Mastodon, Instagram, Facebook, and X. --Katie

I will say this with a whole heart. My arch linux broke and I wanted to try out nix.

The most shocking part about nix is the nix-shell (I know I can use it in other distros but hear me out once), its literally so cool to install projects for one off.

Want to record a desktop? Its one of those tasks that for me I do just quite infrequently and I don't like how in arch, I had to update my system with obs as a dependency always or I had to uninstall it. Ephemerality was a concept that I was looking for before nix since I always like to try out new software/keep my home system kind of minimalist-ish Cool. nix-shell -p obs-studio & obs and you got this.

honestly, I like a lot of things about nix tbh. I still haven't gone too much into the flake sides of things and just use it imperatively sadly but I found out that nix builds are sandboxed so I found a unique idea of using it as a sandbox to run code on reddit and I think I am going to do something cool with it. (building something like codapi , codapi's creator is kinda cool if you are reading this mate, I'd love talking to ya)

And I personally almost feel as if some software could truly be made plug n play (like imagine hetzner having nix os machines (currently I have heard that its support is finnicky) but then somehow a way to get hetzner nix os machines and then I almost feel as if we can get something really really close to digital ocean droplets/ plug n play without any isolation that docker provides because I guess docker has its own usecases but I almost feel as if managing docker stuff is kinda harder than nix stuff but feel free to correct me as I am just saying what I am feelin using nix.

I also wish if something like functional lua (does fxn lua exist??) -> nix transpiler because I'd like to write lua instead of nix to manage my system but I guess nix is fine too!

Hi there, Since you mentioned Hetzner, I thought I would respond here. While we do not have NixOS as one of our standard images for our cloud products, it is part of our ISO library. Customers can install it manually. To do this, create a cloud server, click on it, and then on the "ISO" in the menu, and then look for it listed alphabetically. --Katie

There are stories about e.g. Hetzner requiring all sorts of data from people who want to open/verify accounts so perhaps not. Might just be an anti “money laundering” thing. Especially if the credit card company ends up refunding everything..
Hetzner_OL · 3 months ago
Hi there, During our KYC process, we do sometimes ask customers to submit additional information, including IDs, so that we can verify their identity. However, we follow the General Data Protection Regulation in the EU, amongst other regulations. So we only keep that data for the account verification process. We also have a data protection officer and team who can answer questions potential customers have about data protection measures that we take. Their contact information is here: https://www.hetzner.com/legal/privacy-policy/ --Katie, Hetzner Online

So Hetzner is a term now lol. Soon we may also have the verb 'hetznering'...

"Have you people hetznered your datacenter?" "Why, yes we have!"...

I didn't realize we at Hetzner had become a verb. That's a kinda cool thing to find out on a Monday. :D --Katie

To the best of my recollection I was never assigned or at least told one. I was not a customer so when my contact attempts were not ignored or answered with boilerplate, I was asked for my customer details, which I could not provide. No customer details, no support.

The channels to reach you were pretty limited and hard to find when I tried. I assure you, I tried everything short of getting a lawyer to send you paper mail.

I still have the communication history in my archives, but it would be a little effort to dig it out.

EDIT: Found the documentation. My first complaints were in March 2011. At some point I got assigned an abuse ID MU-000B0F55-1:18. In May the issue was still unresolved.

Hetzner_OL · 7 months ago
Hi again, Looking on the date for that, we don't have data about that case simply because of data protection laws that require us to delete data after a certain time. Does the abuse still exist? If so, perhaps you can create a new ticket (and include the old abuse ID from 2011 so that they understand you tried to report this in the past. You can also include a link to this thread in hackernews and mention my name.) When you submit your abuse report, you will receive an automated response with a new abuse ID. You do not need to be a customer to submit an abuse report with us. https://abuse.hetzner.com/en?lang=en Unfortunately, I cannot submit an abuse report on your behalf. --Katie

They were hosting a StackOverflow copy, which is OK because of Creative Commons. All my answers were still under my name as it should be.

The only difference to the original was my profile picture, which was an explicit porn image.

For several weeks everyone searching for my name or my StackOverflow answers saw that. I'm glad that I was not looking for a job at the time.

I exhausted all possibilities on all channels to rectify this situation short of using a lawyer. I put a lot of effort into getting things in order and seriously considered going the legal route but ultimately decided against it mainly because courts are hit and miss here when it comes to reputation damage of regular individuals as opposed to companies or celebrities.

EDIT: I should have answered your question how this is Hetzner's fault more directly. The website they were hosting did not have the (in Germany) mandatory legal notice (Impressum) or any contact details. This shifts the responsibility to the provider (Providerhaftung). Also I would like to note that I did neither request them to give me their customer's details nor to shut down the site. All I wanted was them to work with their customer to have the offending image removed.

Also I am convinced the porn image was not malice but an accident. The scraper replaced all profile images with ones they probably scraped from a forum. I was just unlucky to get a very indecent one. Had Hetzner collaborated I'm pretty sure this could have been resolved in no time.

Hi there, would you mind giving me the abuse ID for this case. (When someone creates an abuse report with us, our confirmation email includes an abuse ID in the subject line.) If you still have that, and you would like me to ask a colleague about this case, please let me know. --Katie, Hetzner Online
