> My 11:30 pm connecting flight out of Los Angeles International Airport was delayed by 24 hours, forcing me to rest in the airport.

If you ever find yourself in this position, just leave the airport and get a motel room. The US doesn't even have exit immigration, so it's not like they were stuck on the wrong side with a used visa.

The OP's About page notes that they're currently unemployed and living off savings, so I'll cut them some slack, although I'm not entirely sure how that's compatible with international travel from New Zealand to the US.

I also find it incredible that the airline can just delay a flight by 24 hours and offer no compensation or accommodation whatsoever, since in most of the world this would absolutely not, ahem, fly.

HeavenFox · 12 days ago
In the US it basically comes down to, is the delay the airline's fault? If no (eg weather, ATC), then nothing. However, most US travel credit card comes with trip delay insurance which would cover the cost of an overnight stay, regardless of the reason of the delay.

Call the number on the back of your card. You do still have a physical card, right? You don't just have a banking app? Apps can be... uhhh... wrong...

I do this religiously, and last time I got a fraud alert call for my Barclays-issued credit card, I called them back on the number on the card. They seemed amused and didn’t know what to do :(

The article mentions "Technology Connections titled 'Algorithms Are Breaking How We Think'"

I'm a huge fan of the channel, and that video is mostly great and insightful. But his being "puzzled" at the way people use the subscriptions "feed" is kinda surprising. The low percentaged from that feed should lead to asking questions to understand why, instead of assuming people are "doing it wrong". People use subscriptions as a sort of meta bookmarking system. It's also a way of honing their algorithm. People can have a wide variety of interests. Just because someone is subscribed to a channel on anime doesn't mean it's the thing they're looking for at the time they dip into that feed. And some channels just fill the feed up with posts that don't always necessitate the work of pruning it. So, that firehose ends up being a lot of noise. The ideal would be some sort of in-between. Where you can pare down the subscriptions feed based on a current interest. One doesn't need to see the very latest post by a creator of they aren't someone who is chronically online.

I think we will still see the emergence of "human algorithms" that personally curate content for you.

Yeah I don't understand why all YouTubers seem to despise "the algorithm", and some of the creators I follow even created their own rival, Nebula, that does not have "the algorithm". Without "the algorithm" I wouldn't find out about your channel in the first place!

The idea of an iPhone still as a status symbol in 2025 seems strange to me. I understood it in 2008. They are so commonplace and also not really that expensive where it is a financial flex like some watch that cost 10k+ or something.
HeavenFox · 5 months ago
Further, in the US, non-iPhone have terrible resale value, so the monthly cost of iPhone can be cheaper
HeavenFox commented on US Visa Applications Must Be Submitted from Country of Residence or Nationality   travel.state.gov/content/... · Posted by u/cdipaolo
HeavenFox · 5 months ago
This is a significant problem for Chinese H1B holders, because the visa sticker for Chinese passport is only valid for one year. You can stay for longer, but cannot come back if you leave the U.S. Historically folks have been getting their visa renewed in Canada or Mexico, and this is already a huge annoyance - not only do you have to make a pointless trip, but also appointments in these countries are very hard to get as a Third Country National (TCN).

Sure, most other countries don't allow TCNs to apply for visa, but they also don't require their long term residents to leave the country to renew their visa.

So, the correct solution to this is Domestic Visa Renewal. A pilot program was run last year, but it was limited to Indian H1B holders. Without this program in place, disallowing TCNs is simply cruel.

Can someone please explain why we still have chargebacks in 2025? Don't accept cards without 3DS, problem solved. If not, why not? Are some important consumer segments still stuck with cards that don't have it?
HeavenFox · 7 months ago
Chargeback is not just for when your card is stolen. It’s also for e.g. when you never received your order, or your order is substantially different from what’s promised. It’s basically a last resort customer service option.

What's the point of designing custom routes, except I guess for fun? NYC is never going to build any new routes.
HeavenFox · 7 months ago
That is actually the idea. In this simulator, you design services that run on existing tracks. NYC subway is unique in the world in that there are a ton of interlining as well as quadruple tracks, so there are plenty of opportunity to improve system efficiency without building anything new.

Very cool! It would be nice to have a bit more information in the readme about the project structure and e.g. how to adapt it for other cities :)
HeavenFox · 7 months ago
I just tested it out. Since this uses OpenStreetMap data, it is very easy to adapt to other cities.

All input data and scripts are in src/data. Run the two Overpass queries, replacing New York with a city of your choice, and you will get JSON data on the infrastructure, as well as services. Replace the two existing JSON files, run the two transformation scripts, and you are done.

I want to love this but the visual language makes it kind of unusable for me. Why not match the track and train colors to their line color (red for the 123) and then use different visual indicators for train state (stopped, at station, etc)?

For example: Selected: Black fill Normal operation: Color fill with 100% opacity Slowing down: 70% opacity Stopped: striped fill, 50% opacity At station: pulsing opacity

HeavenFox · 7 months ago
That is a good idea. I just added color for the tracks. I'm in the process of redesigning how trains look like.

I can't figure out how to add a route from Bay Ridge to Clinton in NJ. That's my wishlist subway - got to Newark Airport from Brooklyn without going through Manhattan.

Edit: Actually Clifton is in NY, and playing with Google maps there's ZERO public transport from Staten Island to NJ, except by going through Manhattan!

So my idea wouldn't help anyway, unless they extended that subway all the way over the Goethals Bridge.

HeavenFox · 7 months ago
As a Brooklynite I wholeheartedly agree. Unfortunately this is more of a service designer as opposed to a track designer, and it only works with existing infrastructure :(
