I got super excited thinking this was for real birds. I would love someone to gamify birding.

I guess it's not intensely gamified, but I have a couple friends at like 80-90% on Merlin. It's their excuse to travel and live abroad

When I remove "h" from:

rat he

It doesn't accept "rate" as a correct word. What am I doing wrong?

Freeboots · 5 months ago
The space counts and has to be removed. Rathe is not a word, nor is e, so youve got to find another way.

The German police will presumably sell the coins for euros because authorities don’t like to hold volatile exotic instruments any longer than they have to.

I wonder if two billion euros worth of Bitcoin is enough to move the market. Most of the trading volume is in other crypto like stablecoins. Finding buyers worth two billions in actual cash may be harder.

Freeboots · 2 years ago
I think I read long ago that it takes almost 7% liquid market cap to trigger a major movement. Current market cap $800b, so if true then no, 2b wouldn't be enough.

I might be pulling 7% out of thin air though, it's been a long time since I was reading about crypto market manipulation.

plot twist:

hollywood can only claim damages on loss of revenue where, as usual, they'd start with 100% of "streams" == purchase * price == lost revenue, and then probably work down to a more reasonable assumption

if they simply put all the money they got from the website into crypto, and years later it's worth 2B, it does not belong to Hollywood or even the german governemnt

ofc between hollywood and tax department taking their cut there's still plenty left

Isn't that basically what happened with mtgox? Karpeles ended up on the hook for a dollar amount far less than the (then current) value of the crypto lost.

Maybe look into Roblox. I don't actually know much/anything about Roblox, but I'm sure I've read about mods/games/whatever being built in it.

Possibly Minecraft too.

When was the name announced/leaked? They would have tried to acquire relevant domains beforehand, like the guy who owned meta.com (.co? .net?) and didn't even know it was Facebook wanting to buy it off him.

iirc he got a pretty good price, but nothing like if he'd known who the buyer was.

> outrageous fees for Google FI

Last I checked, they were asking for $20 / month for unlimited calling and texting. Do you consider that outrageous?

As an alternative, Google Voice will host your phone number for free. It works with every WiFi connection and even while traveling internationally. Have you considered that?

Freeboots · 2 years ago
That's interesting, will have to check that out. People have mentioned online sms, which sounds pretty much like what I need.

But yeah re:Google Fi, $240/y to recieve maybe 3 sms is pretty bad imo. And unlimited is only within US.

> 2. People don't have their phone on them all the time (and some don't even have a smartphone).

I live in rural Western Australia with almost zero phone coverage, and this is a huge problem. I'm terrified of all these services wanting my phone number, or bugging me to turn on phone 2FA, because the moment that happens, I lose access to that service.

ChatGPT that everyone is spamming on every discussion? I can't even sign up for it (I'm not really bothered about that; it seems like a dangerous crutch than a useful technology).

The problem is the developers have smartphones, their friends have smartphones, their bosses have smartphones and their clients have smartphones. Everyone they know have smartphones and live in places with reception. So they don't or can't imagine something different.

I'm in a similar boat. Not so much service, but I move around internationally and change sims a lot. I dont even have a sim most of the time, I'm on wifi 99% of the time.

Don't want to pay outrageous fees for Google FI or the like, as literally all I need it for is to get into online banking (who have decided sms 2fa is now compulsory, without offering any other options like an authenticator app). I'm currently locked out of my bank, will have to fork out $50+ just to call them, then hope I can convince them I am who I say I am. Then do the dance again next year when they do it again.

Can we all just do authenticator apps?
