A dream can't be failed. A dream is a dream.

I have trouble understanding the enthusiasm about space. Space hostile and empty. Why not simply send space probes and rovers at a fraction of the cost and spend the money more wisely, for example in projects which research aging, cancer, overpopulation and disaster management in face of global warming. Why do we need to make the exception for space and get drunk with nostalgia and romantic ideas of exploration, when the rest of science is usually about sobriety and utility. Where is the sober calculation that space exploration is more effective than other ways of spending research funds?
Eerie · 9 years ago
>Space hostile

Earth is hostile, too. A large part of human civilization is dedicated to making Earth more hospitable for humanity than it is in its natural state. We can do the same for space.

>Space empty

Only in a sense that a large container with a single fist-sized diamond is empty. It is empty on average. It contains an incredible amount of resources. Our solar system could easily house trillions of people (in O'Neill cylinders).

>for example in projects which research aging, cancer, overpopulation and disaster management in face of global warming

We already spend much more on these, than on space research.

Don't assume English is everyone's first language. It happens to be mine, but don't assume everyone is sober either!

I just thought it was funnily relevant. You know, drink enough blood and you just might turn into wight...

I've always wondered if it's a viable wight loss technique. There must be a certain amount of energy that goes into blood production. And losing wight by sitting still for a while is the holy grail.

Market it right and the billionaires might even be able to charge us to give them blood.

I agree, probably a big part of why the standard of living has dropped so much in recent years. We should reduce the budget significantly. Government massively missallocates resources

Keep up the good work. You are such a great example of Poe's law. I can't even

Paper doesn't address what measures the aliens might use to disguise any obvious signature of the starshade.

You'd think that the aliens might not be too keen to create huge beacon advertising their presence to all and sundry...

Eerie · 9 years ago
There is no stealth in space.

Therefore, instead of hiding, the aliens are going to pro-actively fry every competitor civilization by using their solar shades as a Nicoll Dyson Beam... :-)

Socialists/Communists not satisfied with 200 million+ deaths, must want to hit an even 1 billion.

Blows my mind people can even be calling for socialism while we have a real time implosion going on in Venezuela right now. It's ending like every other socialist regime in history, cannibalism, famine, riots, and murder. Meanwhile one of the United State's biggest problem is obesity due to being so prosperous.

Actually I'm not surprised, just look up Yuri Bezmenov's talk on ideological subversion he foretold everything 30+ years ago

USA spends 50% of its budget on health-care and social security. Looks pretty socialist to me.
