Do you view Microsoft as too big to fail because of the federal governments use of Office?
Dudelander · 5 months ago
Not sure if this is a real question but yes, I think Microsoft is too big to fail.

The real news here is that GNIS has been updated with the name. It doesn't seem that Google made an independent decision to change the name. Resistance to this change would really have to happen at the government level, not the tech level. Which really seems to be the point that's being made with this whole ordeal. It's a symbolic move to demonstrate to everyone that what they say goes and that the system isn't resisting their power.

Like I said, loyalty test.

I get "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)" on a Japanese connection.

This stuff is obviously pointless and silly but it's nothing new. I'm sure Google Maps shows UK and French users different names for what I would call the English Channel.

It's more or less a loyalty test. Are you going to use the correct term, or Trump's term. Which side are you on?

We will see! I think Tesla will be just fine, they keep cutting manufacturing costs and therefore prices.
Dudelander · 10 months ago
Maybe in the long run but right now their stock is tanking.

I think you are likely correct. Marketing for Green can only get you so far, next marketing push is Patriotism. I don’t like Musk, but he is a marketing genius of this era.
Dudelander · 10 months ago
I think the myth of Elon's genius has been utterly shattered by the Path of Exile 2 debacle. Turns out faking it until you make it can take you all the way to the top.

Is this worth trying? I tried Threads when it came out and very quickly regretted it. Is this a legit replacement for X/Twitter?
Dudelander · a year ago
Yes, it's basically Twitter without the paid blue checks.

Is there anyone here who uses Bluesky for its own sake rather than protesting against Twitter/Musk/etc.? Trying to understand if it have any inherent pros in terms of design or operation. IMO all these platforms thrive on network effects and their value grows exponentially as their size grows.
Dudelander · a year ago
The main advantages are the lack of bots (for now) and the lack of the paid blue checks. The former is a major improvement because it improves the overall quality of the tweets.

Incumbents (Google, Microsoft, Adobe) seem to broadly struggle at reasonable integration of AI. Just look at windows/github copilot compared claude desktop or cursor.
Dudelander · a year ago
I'm kind of shocked by this comment. Microsoft seems to be dominating the industry, with copilot having over 1.5 million users.

This is the same line of thinking as "we just need $X to wipe out all college debt/medical debt". Sure, you can do it, but what happens when the same amount of debt is racked up again in a couple years? Do you keep using taxpayer money/crowdfunding/whatever else to pay it off every time? Or should you stop and address the core problem first, then fix the symptoms?
Dudelander · a year ago
If the presser is correct (and I am extremely skeptical), then the $7.5B cost would be trivial - even if it had to be done annually.

Have these numbers been verified by a neutral 3rd party? They seem awfully optimistic.
