> Anyone still need testimonies like these to be convinced that Israel

You are operating until a false premise that Palestinians/Hamas are some sort of children and bear no responsibility for anything at all.

Where in reality, the war could have been over in 5 minutes if they released the hostages at any time during the past 3 years. It still can be over in 5 minutes if they choose to do that. But no, they will put as many of their own people in harm's way as necessary to get to the world opinion to be what it is. And literally no one, including you, is questioning that. But please, do tell me that hostages have nothing to do with anything or Netanyahu bad or whatever else you can cook up.

> while Soviet citizens starved

As someone who grew up in the USSR, I can assure you - no one was starving.

> what killed the Soviet Union was disillusion. People at all levels realized that a system that couldn't provide its people the basics didn't deserve to exist.

That is such a simplistic view of what happened. I don't think that the system cared what its people thought at any time during the existence of the Soviet Union.

This talking point is very-much dated now.. Israel has said that they will not stop until Hamas is "eliminated". Netanyahu also threw in another condition to end the war: implementation of Donald Trump's plan to relocate Gaza's civilians [0]. So now I guess it doesn't end until ethnic cleansing is complete? That's lovely.

I wonder how many civilians will be disappeared before a Dem governor finds their balls and musters the state militia. There’s millions of patriots out there just waiting for the call to action. This nonviolent shit will get you killed. MLK was a gun owner.

If that kind of talk worries you, consider how much uglier it will be when the good people of LA form unregulated militias instead. Do you really want to see Ruby Ridge 2: Rooftop Korean boogaloo?

DoodahMan · 3 months ago
The idea of unregulated blue state militias has me chuckling a bit, given how said states have largely neutered their citizen's ability to own capable rifles.

We are to depend on our trusted local law enforcement to protect us, as well as our valiant governors who will assuredly call up local guards to do the same. Examples of brave, novel Democratic resistance to Trump abound these days. There's no need to worry!

They are working on cancelling their legal status. We have allowed Haitian migration because of the incompetence and corruption down there (and our role in a lot of that in the past)
DoodahMan · 6 months ago
That already happened. The Biden/Harris admin quietly did not renew their TPS status while the "eating the pets" nonsense was in the news.

DoodahMan commented on Show HN: I Built a Reddit-style Bluesky client – still rough, but open to ideas   threadsky.app/... · Posted by u/lakshikag

Agreed and there's also the problem that on Bluesky, one user blocking another means that the thread of conversation gets broken for everyone else who may read it.

See e.g. https://github.com/bluesky-social/social-app/issues/7021

> As it stands, if 20 people are involved in a discussion, and ONE single person decides to block someone, then all of a sudden, the 19 other people in the discussion (+ any other viewers) are now inconvenienced simply because one person had an issue with someone else.

> Bluesky does have a bit of a block culture, and as such, this issue is only going to get worse and worse, and threads are going to get harder and harder to read and follow as more and more people get blocked.

Trying to create a Reddit-like experience around this limitation would be very difficult, as the thread breakage is done server-side so the clients don't even get enough info to reconstruct the conversation.

DoodahMan · 7 months ago
The way blocking works on Bluesky is easily the most frustrating part of the platform I've encountered. I'm all for blocking trolls, spammers, etc but it seems even a mild divergence from the crowd gets you whacked. It's a bit stifling in my experience. I wonder if they'll change the way it works..

Equally important: the cats died days later.

Here's a good map of the bird flu breakouts.

https://investigatemidwest.org/2025/01/21/134m-poultry-and-c...

Most people are not paying enough attention to this.

Another real danger arises with the so-called "mixing vessel phenomenon," which occurs when different virus strains infect the same host simultaneously, particularly in the context of influenza viruses.

This primarily happens in animals like pigs, which can be infected by both avian and human influenza strains. When multiple virus strains infect the same cells, their genetic material can undergo reassortment - where segments of genetic material from different viruses combine to create new viral variants.

So a corona variant could mix with this fast-spreading avian flu and produce something that impacts humans more.

Viruses are like drunken teenagers -- they behave worse when they mix!

DoodahMan · 7 months ago
Indeed. I'm particularly getting concerned about co-infection leading to genes being swapped - short-circuiting the evolution needed to adapt to humans. The CDC reported this year's flu season is at the highest levels since 2009 [0]. A CDC study released in November showed ~7% of dairy workers who participated had evidence of recent H5N1 infection. Now we find out that the D1.1 variant that killed a person in Louisiana and sent a teenager in Canada into a coma is in cows [2]. That variant has the PB2 D701N mutation that's associated with mammalian adaptation.

I've been following this thing since February 2023, and it for sure feels like it's getting closer. I see you too are paying attention - cheers.

it's the purpose of the block, it's intentional, and works wonderfully.

it's probably the single feature that will drive me away from Bluesky given how abused it is. not fun erroneously getting lumped in with MAGA and finding yourself in a void.

The internet is filled with shit. Bots, influencers, spammers, the clinically insane, outright enemies.

Why should I listen to the endless amount of slop flat earthers shat upon the internet at large?

The early internet was a pretty decent place to talk, debate, and see opinions you didn't agree with. But those days are long gone. He'll, these days the other side of the conversation could just be a bot that will never change its mind, and waste your time you could be talking to an actual human.

DoodahMan · 7 months ago
if it was aimed just at flat earthers or Qanon types that would be one thing, but that has not been my experience on Bluesky. folks cast quite a wide net and the slightest bit of opinion outside of the hive mind will get you on the shit list.

It's still political but the armies of anonymous blue checks that dominate every reply section on Twitter with regurgitated memes and low-effort insults are missing.
DoodahMan · 7 months ago
are they really missing, or is the shoe just on the other foot? i've been trying Bluesky for a month or so and it indeed seems to just be regurgitated memes and low-effort insults. the only difference is it's from a liberal/Democrat POV. the place comes off as an echo chamber sorely lacking in diversity of opinion tbh. if you go against the grain you'll be added to blocklists, which people seem giddy to use as to curate their echo chamber. hell, for daring to criticize the Democratic party from the left i've found myself on numerous MAGA and far-right blocklists. maybe this will change in due time? that'd be swell.

Many people here upset about this.

Here's what recently happened in Romania, all through TikTok.

Turns out China (or here, Russia) infiltrated the country, waged an enormous disinformation campaign and succeeded by getting their chosen candidate elected. Without TikTok, this would not have happened. I have talked about this with Romanians who concur.

In the real world, there are two responses to this.

1. "Tough luck, it's too late now, should just stand by and watch the country get taken over".

2. "Ban it and future popular big platforms controlled by a foreign adversary".

That's it. We'd all love for something inbetween. It's not happening, all such options would end up becoming 1). That's the state of the modern day world.

The facts that

A. They seem to rather abandon the app rather than receive tens of billions by selling it

B. "The Chinese government also weighed a contingency plan that would have X owner Elon Musk acquire TikTok’s U.S. operations"

C. The remaining mountains of evidence that it is a CCP tool

Mean that the arguments of Congress here are valid and this is the right decision. It is a tool directly controlled by a foreign adversary, for geopolitical, not profit-oriented, purposes. This is nothing like the PATRIOT act or other moves by governments that claim "protect the children" or "protect against terrorism" for some ulterior motive of surveillance or worse. It might be a rarity, but in this case the claims by Congress are factual and a sufficiently good reason.

one would think the ranking member on the House Intel Cmte - my very own Rep - would agree with you, given how he'd be way more privy to such things than you, me, talking heads on TV, etc. yet he disagrees and cites free speech concerns [0][1].

in my mind none of these reasons add up. if this were truly about influence ops on social media we would not have blinders on for our own platforms' role in them. remember Cambridge Analytica and the 2016 campaign, or Facebook's role in the Myanmar genocide? or more-recently the ops Israel ran? furthermore if this were really about our data, we would again not have blinders on. the CCP can still purchase our data as we're all up for sale given our lack of data privacy/protection laws.

as such i tend to side with my Rep: this is bunk, and the pretexts flimsy. i believe the answer is to focus on education - critical thought particularly - and enacting data privacy/protection laws. i do not believe that would lead to 1).

now will that happen? i'm doubtful tbh. our own govt loves the fact that we're up for sale, for it allows them to side-step the need for a warrant. have a great weekend.
