The proper action then would be to declare war, and announce that the airspace is no longer safe for civilian use.

The whole "oh yes, our military is active, but we aren't at war, and yes, the president tweeted about that" spiel is just untenable and ridiculous.

CrossVR · 3 hours ago
They can't declare war, that would require approval from congress. They're relying on the post-9/11 authorization granted to the president to use the military to go after terrorists and those that harbor them.

That is why this administration is leaning heavily into calling the drug traffickers "narco-terrorists" and calling fentanyl their "weapon of mass destruction". They're covering their ass legally so they can invade another country without congressional approval.

I always donate to the random homeless people stopping me on the street. Doesn't really matter to me what they do with it, whatever keeps them warm.
CrossVR · 4 hours ago
Unfortunately in Europe these can also be scams, there are some people who will dress up homeless but are actually just begging for profit.

They're easy to recognize, because they're very forceful in their begging, relying more on intimidation than compassion.

There really is no level people won't sink to for some money.

iRobot's failure is that they made a bet to use CV instead of Lidar for their mapping robots for a long time until it was too late. That made their affordable, non-mapping robots far far worse than only slightly higher priced lidar robots, while their mapping robots were too expensive for mass appeal and were still worse at navigation than up-market lidar based robots. Ultimately they were simply outcompeted.

It seems relevant that the categories healthcare, housing, and higher education are not paid by wages/cash but rather through various means of financing (in the form of insurance for healthcare). (In addition to not being outsourcable).

New cars not increasing looks strange but that might be a US phenomena, where most cars might be imported and the median car have "shrunk" in size over the period.

CrossVR · a day ago
It highly depends on what your definition of a price increase is. The cars people actually buy have definitely become more expensive with more and more people choosing to buy SUVs.

The sedan hasn't become more expensive, but people don't feel safe driving them anymore between all the large SUVs, this pushing more people towards buying more expensive cars.

No obviously not. Lots of machines replace workers.

Why would taking scarce resources away from productive businesses and allocating to unproductive things be good for anyone other than government bureaucrats?

CrossVR · a day ago
Infrastructure is not unproductive, even machines need roads. I don't think self-driving vehicles should be exempt from road tax.

No. Questioning the dominant narrative was in fact censured.

I believed in the lab leak theory so for me getting the vaccine was a no brainer. I could get infected by one of two things developed in a lab, only one of which had clinical trails on humans. I went with the clinically tested option.

This has been the standard of care ever since the vaccine became available in the 90s (US). The origin of the "parties" was that first-time chickenpox was perceived to be less harmful in children than adults prior to the vaccine, so you wanted to make sure people's first exposure wasn't in adulthood.

CrossVR · 11 days ago
Unfortunately that is not the case for me in the Netherlands. No Chickenpox vaccination is offered and making sure kids get it early is still considered the right way to do immunization.

The idea being that it's better for people to get it as kids, because if you give them vaccines as kids you'll have to give them boosters as adults. Whereas a latent disease will provide a lifetime of immunity.

We vaccinate for many of those already. The vast majority of seniors have the shingles virus already. Only a small percentage would likely have dementia not linked to another likely cause. Just as HPV only causes cancer in some individuals.

It wouldn't surprise me if it turns out all these tie back to immune dysregulation and are just triggered by different viruses in different people.

CrossVR · 11 days ago
For Multiple Sclerosis multiple studies have shown it is strongly correlated with an EBV infection and only an EBV infection. After the infection it just becomes a genetic lottery with a really shitty prize.

I wonder when we'll finally accept that there's no such thing as a harmless latent disease. Chickenpox, EBV, HPV, they're all associated with either neurodegeneration or cancer.

We should be vaccinating kids against all of them rather than sending them to Chickenpox parties.

NB: most people choosing not to take it in France tend to fall into the medically at risk, stubborn, or, "so far down the rabbit hole that you probably can't trust these people to make sensible life choices" groups. (This alone being a good reason why this 'control' group had a slightly higher all cause mortality at 6months)

Remember, France was one of the wonderful countries where you couldn't legally shop or work if you were deemed to be 'not at risk' && 'unvaccinated' and achieved a very high rate as a result biasing the control group. (This is a purely statistical statement)

And for reference, I do think the vax is dangerous in terms of massive populations and we don't have mass graves due to mRNA problems (although several large cancer blips). In the same way in countries with low vaccination rates we don't have mass graves at 10% population or higher. Cv19 was always going to kill and an untested treatment is likely to kill those who were at risk.

(I'm willing to bet in the case of cv19 the ones who were hit hardest would have been hit badly by either vector, virus or mRNA. But we'll pretty much never be able to prove or disprove that...)

I'm sure both extremes will jump to the rallying cry of "2 more weeks..." So yes of course I'm wrong, I only worked on analysing early 'data' and pulling apart the models so what do I know.
