Does this work in practice? Historically my actual residence is needed for tax reasons, i.e. properly tracking what state I owe income tax in for cash compensation and stock options.

get a PMB in your state (or county even). You'll be surprised how many PMBs exist

It seems to me that this is the key takeaway for founders:

Your accounting stack is

  1. accounting software
  2. bookkeeping (ie operating the accounting software)
  3. cpa / cfo (ie for tax and financial planning)
The benefit and problem with "nextgen" solutions like bench, kick, etc is that they provide a proprietary solution for the entire stack. This could be better/faster/cheaper but also comes with risk, as we are seeing in real time.

In contrast, the minimal risk approach is to source your accounting stack from different vendors:

  1. accounting software (eg quickbooks, xero, wave)
  2. bookkeeping (hire a person or use a service)
  3. cpa / cfo (hire a person or use a service)
If you use "standard" accounting software, you can change the other layers of your accounting stack at will. The total cost of layers 1 and 2 might be $6k-$8k per year for a company with revenue, which looks more expensive than the nextgen solutions. But the reduced risk and increased flexibility may be worth it.

Agreed, but how do you protect yourself against quickbooks/xero/wave going under? Especially with Wave being mostly(?) free

Didn’t see this in the article, do they have multi az redundancy? I.e. if the entire raid goes up in flames what’s the recovery process?
Amfy · a year ago
I believe they replicate from NJ to WA (Seattle). At least that's something they spoke about many years ago.

Personally I prefer Migadu and tend to recommend them to tech savvy people. Their admin panel is excellent and straightforward to use, prices are based on usage limits (amount of emails sent/received) instead of number of mailboxes.

Migadu is just all around good, only downsides I can find are subjective. The fact that they're based in Switzerland and unless you're "good with computers" something like Fastmail will probably be better.

Seems Migadu is hosted on OVH though? Huge red flag.. no control over infrastructure (think of Hetzner shutting down customers with little to no warning)

On a few forum sites I'm on, people are just giving up. Looking forward to the post-mortem on how they weren't ready for this (with just a tiny bit of schadenfreude because they've interviewed and rejected me twice).

Japan has proven for 3 decades the exact opposite. They live on deficit and borrowing and still were just able to be on top of the deflation.
Amfy · 2 years ago
U.S is a lot more dynamic economy than Japan

Economy not responding with inflation due to money printing is bad
