Diaspora is my favorite Egan book. Permutation City seems to get talked about more, but the dust theory stuff just felt implausible, and it has one of the worst sex scenes I've ever read. Maybe it's because Diaspora is less concerned with anything as abstract as consciousness and more interested in how different forms of life play out, which I find fun when it's done well.

The sex in that sex scene is supposed to be cringingly bad. Supposed to be uncomfortable to read. Did you think it was poorly done, or was it just too uncomfortable-on-purpose?

Alpha channel/mask handling still sucks in Affinity and keeps sucking.[1]

For me this is already yet another app I paid for that is on the way to the famous 'enshittification'.

It's been years since I saw it mentioned in the Affinity forums first. And still a workflow so essential hasn't been addressed by the devs.

The Affinity apps being slow to adopt improvements has nothing to do with “enshittification”. They’re not actively doing user-hostile stuff for the sake of their stock price, or anything in that ballpark.

The fact is that different things are “essential” to different users. Whenever they ship a new feature, some users are like “I wanted this!” while many are like “Still not shipping what we’re asking for!”

I do think Affinity should pick up the pace (and they maybe have, a tiny bit, since V2?) and address recurring forum topics more openly. But they’re not “enshittifying” their apps, they’re just not doing what some people wish.

I find it fascinating how you speak with so much authority. I know Jeanine Banks and I've been really upset with all the "diversity hire" nonsense coming from many of you who cannot hold a candle next to her. For your information she had been programmingor since high school and was hired into a government agency as a high school programmer-intern. That internship was her introduction into the worlf of technology. She has been an executive at GE and Amazon. Let's take alook at your resume and see if you can get into the rooms that Jeanine has been in. The condescension from many of you and particularly Ian's hit piece has been a disappointment to see.

I dare say we’ve all been in some rooms we didn’t really deserve to be in, wouldn’t you?
