"Traditional" companies like Amazon, Apple and Oracle heavily punish employees for banding together, freely communicating and protesting like this, so they would never have the opportunity to protest controversial projects like this. I fear the main lesson corporate leaders will take from this is to lockdown on employee freedom.

I think the main lesson from Google was make sure the mainstream media agrees with your point prior to protesting it. If the media does not agree, they will ask for your head(s) and threaten to boycott your employer until it is delivered on a silver platter.

The number of people protesting is inconsequential as platters can be built to accommodate a near infinite number of heads.

How does AirBnB plan to ensure compliance with local construction regulations? That seems like it could be rather expensive for this endeavor.

Because last time that happened it was a big hassle.

I had to:

    * Do a phone call
    * Fill out paperwork
    * Wait for a new card to arrive
    * Go through all services I use the card for and change it

To whom shall I address the invoice for my time though?

We don't need faith in God to have a community, only faith in one another. The premise that community cannot exist without a religious basis is a false one.
706f6f70 · 7 years ago
I would argue that this would be a new event in human history. I can't think of a single major civilization that was not religious in some capacity.

That seems at odds to the decline of religion across Europe.

UK is now majority atheist, and Ireland once devoutly catholic is far more secular than it was. A majority voted to end the ban on abortion in Ireland only this year. So I am baffled at what "crisis of secularism" Kaufman is imagining.

I think that the factor for Europe is immigration. A majority of new Europeans are Muslims and that is by far the fastest growing religion.

As a tall, handsome young white man with a great employment history at internationally known companies I do not like this at all.

There is no perceivable bias that would penalise me, besides the fact that I do not fulfil diversity quotas... Or do I? I am not straight! I really am the full package.

706f6f70 · 7 years ago
Come to Canada, you will be penalized so hard you'll wish the public health care system covered pre-crisis mental health.

The good news is that because gender is a social construct, no one can challenge your assertion that you are in fact non-binary. Religion is the same. Verdict is still out on race however.

That is only true assuming the selection criteria that weren't blinded were themselves free of bias. That's very rarely true.

And if it's not true, arguably what you've done is removed the adjustment variables that could correct the bias, rather than the bias itself.

706f6f70 · 7 years ago
> were themselves free of bias.

At what point do we start growing people solely for the purpose of leading unbiased existences away from all of humanity? Of course these existences are isolated from all humanity lest they associate the human that gives them food with positivity, or someone having a bad day with negativity. And of course, we kill these unbiaseds shortly after every selection process, since the mere process of selection itself, generates bias.

Some SF writer must have beaten me to this right?

Why do people still live there (apart from those who cannot move)?
706f6f70 · 7 years ago
Because not all societies enshrine individual freedom as their primary value. China has historically valued orderliness, collective well-being, and personal sacrifice. This sucks from a Western perspective, but it also means that a great many of the problems the West faces will never manifest in China.

There are very few absolute wrongs in the world and it's not clear that this would be one of them.

It's possible that this turns out to be a real sign, and I think other commenters have some good reasons why it could be. That said, I have been an AAPL stock owner and watcher for a few years and have noticed a pattern. Every September, Apple introduces new iPhones. Later in the fall, the articles come out citing weak demand.

2017: "'Anemic' iPhone 8 demand drags Apple shares lower", https://www.reuters.com/article/us-apple-iphone/anemic-iphon...

2016: "Apple may be cutting iPhone 7 orders as demand falls", https://www.cultofmac.com/456431/apple-may-cutting-iphone-7-...

2015: "Apple stock slides on claims of slashed iPhone component orders, weak iPhone 6s demand", https://appleinsider.com/articles/15/12/01/apple-stock-slide...

Note that there were articles in those years also suggesting high demand. My point being that articles suggesting soft demand happen every year. Except 2014 when the iPhone 6 came out. Everyone was in total agreement then that demand was insane (and that quarter proved to be very hot indeed for Apple).

My point is that we won't truly know what demand looked like for the new iPhones until late January when Apple announces earnings.

706f6f70 · 7 years ago
There seem to be many unique things to this year though:

* Apple announces it will no longer report unit sales. This is a clear shift in strategy.

* Orders have been cut not once, but twice.

* Suppliers have been slaughtered in earnings reports.

* Suppliers have cut staff and are trying to control costs.

I agree there is a "cry wolf" element to this, but sometimes the wolf really does show up.

It strikes me as somewhat ironic that Nature would public this given that they recently tweeted:

> Editorial: The US Department of Health and Human Services proposes to establish a legal definition of whether someone is male or female based on the genitals they are born with. This proposal has no foundation in science and should be abandoned. [1]

That last sentence just absolutely boggles the mind and I'm not entirely sure how this journal retains any semblance of reputation when its editorial board is so clearly willing to put ideology over science.
