Yes. Those that have the power to trick others into giving them even more power have little restraining them from doing so.

It's also complicated by the fact that those who push against it haven't exactly made a name for themselves as reasonable people (at least the most vocal ones haven't) leading to derision of "freedumbs" and so forth.

I mourn the dearth of different perspectives and not assuming everyone is on a "side".

'power to trick' - that hit the nail on the head! The oligarchs, higher level bureaucrats, politicians, extreme wealthy etc. that is the superpower, at their core, they are magicians but not in a good, fun way, more like con-man who have mastered the power to _trick_ and deceive. I came to the conclusion sometime ago, that all these people of power and position are really just charlatans, albeit extremely good ones, they are nothing to aspire to and respect, they are no better then a grifter using 'slight of hand' and deception to remove as much wealth and power from others to themselves and when all else fails, they will resort to force/war if need be. In a nutshell, nothing but liars, cheats, cowards and dishonorable megalomaniacs that put on a (good) show for us peasants to better rob us blind.

Honest question - how do you all cope with this? Do you ignore it because it is painful? Do you donate to environmental groups like the EDF or NRDC? Did you quit your tech/advertising job to work on renewable energy?

I personally have been donating to environmental groups, but it feels like a cop-out. I'm using money to pay-away some of my guilt and my unwillingness to put more substantial effort towards such an important cause as this. It weighs on me daily though.

So honestly, how do you all cope? For those of you who have had the willingness/bravery to go "all-in", how did you do it? I'm addicted to my comfortable, wealthy lifestyle as a software engineer and I'm ashamed of it.

Plant some trees, preferably food bearing ones (if it makes sense in the location), nurture them. Bask in their growth. Simple, effective, takes little time and next to no money relatively. It is something just about anyone can do if motivated and will most likely still be around long after you have gone. Forget the enormity of the issues and just do something small, in your control that can have a +'ve effect!

Sorry about your loss.

There is no acceptable punishment for a crime of this scale that doesn't adequately deter future criminals. Billions in rewards isn't just inadequate, it's disrespectful to every victim and their families.

2Xheadpalm · 5 years ago
No acceptable punishment, maybe not, however, fear can go a long way! Actual fear of _really_ losing all their family wealth, basically everything but the shirt on their back with a lifetime of hard labor to follow is probably a scarier proposition to these kind of scum then death is. On that note, hanging some of them from the rafters may also help deter this kind of parasitic behavior going forward.

For now unfortunately you have to turn on "Optional diagnostic data" - aka "full spy mode" - to access this feature.
2Xheadpalm · 5 years ago
Are you able to turn it on for the 'Windows Insider Program', do an update to latest dev build, then opt out of 'Window Inside Program' and in turn disable 'Optional Diagnostic data' ? Genuinely asking, as I would like to test it but would like to keep diagnostics phoning back to M$ home to a min. if possible.

Low Tech Magazine is pretty much bullshit from cover to cover and these articles are great examples of the genre. Read the first one with a critical eye. It doesn't make any sense. It's just a deceptive argument constructed to make performative primitivism seem competitive with modern technology, which it isn't. An electric induction cooker is superior to any kind of fire, in all aspects and ways, by large margins in every direction.

'An electric induction cooker is superior to any kind of fire, in all aspects and ways, by large margins in every direction.' - except in running costs, I have no idea but assume they draw around 2000 watts for each plate.

Alternatively, I can collect enough firewood in a few days of my spare time, I would have spent in the woods anyway, that will heat my modestly sized house cozily and cook all my meals for at least 6 months of the years in temperatures that can drop to as low as -40 Celsius for days at a time. All it cost me was a bit of sweat and hard yakka in the autumn.

2Xheadpalm commented on "Equal pay for equal work" in remote jobs   nityesh.com/equal-pay-for... · Posted by u/nityeshaga

> You should expect "equal pay for equal work" at your new remote job

So naive.

In an ideal, utopian world? Maybe it would work this way. Maybe.

In reality, your compensation is a function of your negotiating power. Some people, in fact, manage to get the same pay even when working remote, because they're "highly employable". Others don't.

And let me add: I almost agree that remote work shouldn't necessarily command the same pay. A company's goal is to "extract" from each employee more value than his/her/their salary. If a company manages to save on a salary because the employee doesn't have much negotiating power, good for the company.

This is not to say that a company should do anything it wants, far from it. It simply means that if you accept that you live in a market-enabled society, your salary is at stake, too. You want to pay $2 dollars for milk, instead of $20? That's thanks to competition between companies. That's market forces at play. You want it there? Accept it on salary negotiation too.

2Xheadpalm · 5 years ago
In general I agree with you. As you point out, the company is under no obligation to do what is 'fair' for my work and it is my negotiating skills/power that will dictate how much I get paid. Fine, I accept this. However, on the flip side, a company should not expect my undying loyalty, working for free after hours, or take one for the team to get that release out etc. And no I will not be joining them on those bonding, team-building zoom meetings and/or retreats (will they still be a thing in a post-covid world?). Sorry its just business, maybe if you paid me equally for my work I would be more open to the above.

2Xheadpalm · 5 years ago
Extinction of the human race, maybe not BUT it would be the end of life on planet Earth as we know it. It would be a shame if extinction is not the outcome, any species _stupid_ enough to attempt to dominate its political and national 'ego' in such a manner deserves elimination from the gene pool of possible species choices.

What do you do for an ISP out there? I'm guessing a small consumer-grade Ku or Ka band VSAT. Or do you have a local WISP?
2Xheadpalm · 6 years ago
You are correct.

There is no cell reception, we have satellite, the ISP here in Canada is called Xplornet, which I believe uses Hughesnet. Download speed is pretty good, streaming services typically work fine with SD, voice comms. can be a bit of pain with the 700ms latency. Since covid-19 with many more people working from home etc. I have noticed a significant drop in bandwidth and how spikey latency can get at times
