I've been running a SaaS on Next.js + GraphQL for 4.5 years now, sticking to Pages router has eliminated most of the complexity.

I recently rewrote my auth to use better-auth (as a separate service), which has allowed me to start moving entirely off Next.js (looking at either React Router 7 or Tanstack Router).

Back when I started, Next.js made server side rendering incredibly easy, but it turns out I didn't need it. My marketing site is entirely static, and my app is entirely client rendered.

I would recommend React Router over Tanstack. I tried both and RR was so much easier and more reliable.

Tanstack seems to be following Next.js in that they’re just over complicating everything and their docs felt lacking for the most of their features.

Do you know the reasons why people (including you) don't want in-office jobs? Now multiply these reasons by 10.

Instead of 1 hour commute, have an airplane travel or a couple hours drive. Instead of hours in a cubicle, have an hotel. And now add more expenses and crappy food.

Sure, the "social interactions" in a pub might be more pleasant than the "water-cooler side chat" but they won't be much more productive.

Socializing is overrated.

I myself am full time remote and look forward to attending one annual tech conference.

For me it feels like a nice event. Being related to my career, learning something new from passionate people and stepping out of my comfort zone a bit, all while not having to think much about work.

I have naturally wide feet, and it's no advantage for any sport requiring footwear. Soccer shoes, climbing shoes, ice skates, snowboard boots, the list goes on, mostly manufactured for average to skinny sized feet.

Ice skates in particular are sold in different widths. But yes it’s the norm that the “regular” or narrow fit is the default.

Are you seriously making an argument that workers have worse conditions now than in the 60s?

Feel free to make an argument that we are moving in the wrong direction NOW, but not that we have moved in the wrong direction entirely since the 60s.

40 years ago would be after 1985.

Maybe we should all just live online

Or we build things that people actually want to use in those prime locations.

I enjoy working from home. But I'm not going to deny that it has had a catastrophic impact on the downtown business and commercial districts in many small and medium-sized cities. Those places stuggled badly with lockdown in general and a lot still have not recovered from the sudden societal shift where so many people just stay at home in the suburbs instead of coming into the office. I don't know what the answer is, and I certainly don't want to return to the office. But the outlook is bleak for a lot cities.
16mb · 10 months ago
The city and those business need to change to meet the shift. They are just being greedy and seem to want us workers to both support ourselves and bail them out.

These are the kinda articles I like to just read the last paragraph. So much work to paint some annoying ass story; sorry, I skipped to the end haha.

> So for me, I actually want what Google Maps gives me (or tries to give me).

One thing I find is that Google Maps really, really assumes that walking is very very bad and no-one wants to do it. So for instance, if I'm going to a particular place I will get a 39 bus and then walk 15 minutes. If I ask Google how to get there, I'll get a route with two transfers; if the stars align it'll take about as long as one-bus plus walk. So if I want Google to tell me when the 39 bus is coming, I'll have to lie about where I'm going.

(Also, at least where I am Google's realtime data is questionable, with the data from the operator and some other third parties being more reliable.)

I had the same problems with Google Maps. I ended up using Apple Maps in Japan and it gave much more realistic routes

Is it normal in the US for software developers to work 60-70 hour weeks? I understand this is the case in hip startup culture, but what about normal, boring companies? I work as an embedded software developer in Belgium, and here 40 hours is normal.
16mb · 2 years ago
No not typically. In my experience most people work 40-45 hours at the boring companies that I’ve been at

Wouldn't the client being open source mean botting is essentially impossible to control?
16mb · 2 years ago
Yup pretty much. There’s a large percentage of the community botting. Most of the bot builders have forked RuneLite to add custom scripts for automating tasks.

Jagex has made some improvements to their bot detection mostly through detecting if you’re playing on an “approved” build of RuneLite (the primary repo) in the past year or so, but this method went undetected for so long that many have maxed their accounts.
