But I think the idea of using a news app that millions of people have installed as cover for a whistleblower service is actually very clever.

The particularly clever part is making the implementation open source, which should significantly reduce the complexity for other news organisations wanting to include the same functionality in their own apps, which would further extend the cover of plausible deniability for a whistleblower.

Project lead here, the Secure Messaging part of the app is accessible without a subscription through the main menu.

THANKS! The app store always makes it difficult or impossible to discern what features are available via IAP/subscription rather than the free version.
