somewhat unrelated, but i really wish platforms like youtube and instagram had the ability to "opt-out" of certain features. i find that the short form content in youtube shorts / instagram reels can be really easy to waste a few minutes on.

if anyone knows any solutions (ex. browser extensions) that solve this, id be really interested

People who don't use AI will be better off. We all know people who cheated--heavily--really do get weeded out (unless they are super rich, in which case they get promoted). I worry about the young cheaters who are dooming themselves by squandering the one chance they get to really learn, and wish there was some way to make them see the long game they need to prepare for.

i personally disagree with this because i, along with many others, simply see school as a means of qualification for certain jobs and internships. sure, there is useful knowledge obtained along the way of a degree, but i think for many people theyd be better off spending less time on subjects that arent relevant towards their goals, which using AI can enable them to do.

for example: if you had repetitive busywork for homework assignments, it doesnt make sense to spend a lot of time on it, once you have proven to yourself that you know how to do it anyway.

I would make a different list of points:

1. The "new" of today is no match for the "new" of back then: Breaking Bad is as good for a first binge today as it was 2008. I'm currently watching Mad Men for the first time and can't see how anything could've been made differently 18 years(!) ago. That's 7 seasons of a well-made show and I couldn't care less for any Netflix production that gets cancelled after its 2nd season. The change in quality from Star Trek: TNG to Breaking Bad seems like a huge leap, do these leaps exist anymore?

2. There is no discussion about any current Zeitgeist, everything feels intermixed and nothing is ever finished. Leaving politics aside here, consumers are beta testers without any way to provide direct feedback to producers (one that isn't public outrage of some kind) - every other usual customer interaction is just a waste of your time. Big studios are busy milking "universes" that have been created pre-social media.

3. Algorithms are part of the creation for these problems, not their solution. Big tech just doesn't like this take, creative work is risky, businesses need to scale up quickly and efficiently.

for point 1, i think this example is a bit biased. its not really fair to compare random shows made now to some of the greatest shows ever made.

although, i will say, it is a lot better of an experience watching old, well reviewed shows / movies, than it is to watch whatever comes out now. but again thats mainly because i can choose from some of the best productions ever.

currently im trying to write more! i have been a fan of several bloggers for years now, but have never had the courage to start myself. hoping to change that this year.

i figure writing online would be a fun way to try and start conversations with people who are interested in the same topics. also, hopefully any technical posts can go to show employers that im not just another junior engineer whos reliant on LLMs for coding, and have some deep knowledge.

The Greatest Books https://thegreatestbooks.org

I created it in 2008 and have maintained and improved it over the years. I am trying to figure out how to monetize it more. I currently make around $2k a month. I just use adsense and have a paid membership feature through buymeacoffee. I get massive traffic and I'm pretty much the #1 result for anything related to best/greatest books.

It's built with Rails and Postgresql and hosted on 3 linode servers. I get around 250k page visits a day.

one suggestion i have is to add a few images or a short video of you using the app. personally i dont usually download apps to just try them out, without at least having some idea of what to expect
