So how do you know it's the photos and not the video that has been altered to give a certain impression? Also, there's still this seemingly endless staircase...
ziml77 · 6 hours ago
Because the lighting in the photos simply make no sense. Look at how many florescent light tubes there are. The place should be much brighter and whiter.

Most manufacturers just don't give a shit. Had the exact same experience with a well-reviewed Acer laptop a while back, ended up getting rid of it a few months in because of constant annoyances, replaced with a MacBook Air that lasted for many years. A few years back, I got one of the popular Asus NUCs that came without networking drivers installed. I'm guessing those were on the CD that came with it, but not particularly helpful on a PC without a CD drive. The same SKU came with a variety of networking hardware from different manufacturers, without any indication of which combination I had, so trial and error it was. Zero chance non-techy people would get either working on their own.

My venture outside of MacBooks included a Dell XPS. Supposed to be their high end, and that year's model was well reviewed by multiple sources.... yet I returned it after like a week. The fan would not only run far too often but the sound it made was also atrocious. I have no clue if mine was defective or if all the reviewers are deaf to high frequencies. And the body was so flimsy that I would grab the corner of the laptop to move it and end up triggering a mouse click.

OK, a couple bad icons here. But am I the only one who thinks the wrench metaphor actually looks good?
ziml77 · 18 hours ago
I like the wrench and the only icon that feels particularly unclear to me is the one for Disk Utility. Expansion Slot Utility is also a bit non-obvious, but the old one was even worse since there was just a small image of a Mac Pro slapped in the middle. That could mean it's for just about anything related to the system.

My main workflow mouse has been the Logitech g600 for years. I love having 24 different macro keys accessible with my thumb (stuff like copy/paste, ctrl+w, ctrl+shift+t, enter, etc), but it's terribly un-ergonomic and the software is terrible (and doesn't let you configure settings except through its eye-watering UI). And afaict, Logitech actually stopped making them, so I have to snap them up whenever resellers put one on Amazon, since the main mouse button switch has a nasty habit of starting to double click after too long.

It's to the point where I'm considering just commissioning a hardware hacker to make me a custom mouse.

ziml77 · 20 hours ago
I was hoping for so long that Logitech would make a wireless version of the G600, but instead they killed it. I'm begrudgingly using a wireless Razer Naga now. It's pretty crappy though because it doesn't have onboard profile storage so you need to run their bloated software just to remap the buttons. Also it lacks the awesome ring finger button that the G600 has, despite the Naga having space on top that could have been used for an extra button.

The only thing that is making this creepy is the color grading on the photos. Here's the first video I found of the station, which shows the stairs and the platform are well-lit https://youtu.be/V3vYuMdCsqs?t=557

To be fair, it doesn't really "lock you in": you're still able to restore your backups indefinitely even if you do not renew, just not take new ones.

And even if you're scared of them removing the ability to restore for free, they released code to handle the new mrimgx format under the MIT license: https://github.com/macrium/mrimgx_file_layout

The two last issues facing users switching are (imo) battery management and track pads. I know there are solutions but they're very complicated to setup properly for the average user.
ziml77 · 2 days ago
I was messing around with a Framework laptop about a year ago and was amazed at how awful trackpad support is. If the default acceleration curves are going to be garbage, at least give me an easy way to edit them. Dealing with a config file sucks compared to being able to move sliders and feel the changes immediately.

And then kinetic scrolling is poorly supported. If you want it for every application you can turn it on at the driver level, but that doesn't work right because it is the wrong level to handle it at. It has no concept of your active application so it will continue your momentum between applications if you happen to alt-tab right after scrolling.

I'm confused about how this can actually do any damage when it comes to filling in passwords. If the password manager is suggesting to fill a password then it means you're on the site that password is valid for.

I thought you must be exaggerating, but then I looked... And yeah, that M needs some work to make it not look like a woman bending over.

patchboard

: a switchboard in which circuits are interconnected by patch cords

First Known Use

1934, in the meaning defined above

I find it far more likely that patches--in terms of fixing problems with small, targeted changes--derives from the use of the term for fixing holes in cloth by sewing on another piece of cloth.
