The best place to help you cope with continuing an addiction, but not the best place to get rid of an addiction.

If you want to get rid of an addiction, stay away from addicts and everything they produce. Stay away from their artistic creations, stay away from their complicated explanations of the world, and stay away from their gossip. Also, please don't study to become any kind of "drug counselor," get regular person jobs and normal hobbies. You're dying of romance, and you need to figure out how to love the world as it is.

This is good advice and it's worked for other things I've been addicted to.

I guess you can think of this as my retirement from Hacker News. Thank you kind stranger.

As someone who programs embedded systems the bloat people have grown to accept in the userspace is utterly mindbogling to me.

Sure it is a challenge to write performant code, I know that as well as any other embedded programmer, but my feeling is that in userspace or web programming most people have stopped even trying to be performant.

They will give you paginated content with 10 items per page, items whose data makes up less than 1% of the javascript they are loading. Meanwhile you could literally give people all items with no javascript and be faster (if you have the luxury of knowing the number of items).

I don't think many of us find it acceptable judging by the comments here. Programmers aren't the target audience though, the actual target audience probably has no idea how much faster these things can and should run.

Says the company that only hires in India now and is notorious for disloyalty towards the workers that made them.

$150 billion is bullshit as well, R&D spending they have committed to is actively going down year over year. No details at all on how they came up with that number and nothing at all has been signed.

That is why I try to steer away projects whose ultimate goal is to remove people jobs, automatic cash out systems, AI, ecormerce sites for big retail chains that close down their physical shops, ....

Duolingo are not the only ones, I am aware of a project where the whole translation team for internal trainings was replaced by AI automatic translation of training materials.

Any developer that celebrates AI vibe coding, is going to get some bad vides in the coming years.

Oh 100%. As far as I am concerned, anybody that has touched that stuff is blacklisted and radioactive. All its gonna take is a little prick and the financing on the whole house of cards falls apart.

So don't think my hostile opinion towards developers that are involved in using AI to abuse their fellow humans is going to be remotely rare in the future. All the necessary preconditions are already there and the only reason it hasn't been noticed yet is because the people that fucked up are still able to get jobs at companies riding AI funding to do AI work.

Look what happened to a lot of the crypto bros. Now multiply that by 10 and the amount of nasty shit they were doing to other workers by 10 and I don't think people are going to take it as lightly as a lot of the crypto bros got off, which was usually just a black mark and severe down leveling when they came back to work at actual companies.

> The overwhelming majority of incels are android users

Seriously ?

I have read your links, it shows that some kids are stupid and discriminate over what phone brand one is using.

First of all, that’s purely a USA issue.

Secondly, it says nothing about incels.

A phone brand doesn’t make you more charismatic, in fact in my experience I have seen more iPhone user being insecure than Android user.

Especially the one who invest heavily into Apple « ecosystem », they are more often than not (in Europe) nerds.

Just to be honest, I write that from my iPhone. Really got no bias.

zifpanachr23 · 8 months ago
Lmao. Don't pay any attention to the thing about incels, which whether true or not, so obviously does not establish that android was a causative factor. Look at the percentage of US people that have Android. iPhone is not nearly as dominant in the US as spoiled brat teens seem to think. Nearly half the population is Android users. I'm sure we are all incels.
