zarq commented on Magnet-free induction motor aims to nearly halve carbon emissions   newatlas.com/automotive/m... · Posted by u/cainxinth

This article doesn’t explain anything innovative. There are plenty of motors around, using “wireless induction” (as opposed to some other kind of induction?), operating at very high efficiency.

> The two companies aim to cut overall carbon footprint by more than 40% as compared to a permanent-magnet e-motor with equivalent power.

Modern motors, with or without magnets, are efficient enough that saving 40% of emissions isn’t going to happen. (Or maybe they mean sometime strange by “overall carbon”).

zarq · a year ago
They seem to be saying that the absence of rare earth metals makes the overall lifecycle carbon emissions be 40% lower than those that do use these metals. It does not seem to be related to the efficiency of the motor per se.

I can't imagine how delusional a person has to be to think it's even possible to review codebases as large as that. They'd need years to go through everything
zarq · 3 years ago
You don't need to go through everything to form an opinion. I bet they're only interested in a couple of specific points, and not a full review of every single line.

Opening the auth window in a tab instead of a window would help. Including an avatar and extensions in the popup window and opening it on top of the chrome on the main browser window would help to differentiate it.
zarq · 3 years ago
Even if browsers did this, you can still execute this attack. As long as not all of your users know what the expected behavior is, you can trick them with a fake UI as long as it looks believable.

Agreed. I started backpacking with my brother a few years ago and it was miserable the first few times because there were so many things that we were anxious about, we bad with, or just didn't know to do. For example, we bought heavy waterproof gear and learned quickly there is no avoiding getting wet, so might as well trade in the waterproofing for fast-drying. Now we can open up a little and have a little fun in the rain. Same with coffee. We used to lug gear around to make piping hot coffee, now we heat up a little water and mix in a little instant and we get 75% of the benefit with very little overhead.
zarq · 4 years ago
Well see you were just optimizing for the wrong things. You thought avoiding wet was the thing to optimize for, but now, with experience, you find other things are more important to you and you aim at optimizing those. What things are wrong and right vary by person and by purpose (and probably by time, too).

What's stopping a bank of fish, or a whale from eating the whole thing?

Likely the appearance of the colony being a single, gigantic, thing.
zarq commented on Ask HN: Was Your Turkey Dry?    · Posted by u/itchyjunk

Would agree. I smoke about 5-6 turkeys a year. I’ve got it down pretty well.

However I rarely do it for thanksgiving if extended family are coming (at least the wrong ones).

I’ve had them freak out a out the juice, about the little “done timer” not going off, about internal color etc.

In one case I had an aunt demand it go into an oven and sure enough overcooked it (which is why I now often don’t make one for extended family).

People do similar with pork and ribs and such. I’ve never had an issue and still cook my meat to certain temps etc. but it’s one of those things everyone’s an expert on.

I will say that those that have eaten my smoked turkey, ribs, Boston butt etc tend to like it, if not prefer it, but that’s never been enough to deter some naysayers.

That said, it’s also why I like dark meat. Can’t stand dry meat that’s not jerky.

The best thing I did for not having dry turkeys or other meat, is a meat thermometer. I, like your aunt, just didn't pay attention to anything before.

I really wish somebody (or a lot of people) would write a hit movie/book where an innocent person on the run from a stasi-like state in 2035 has to face an interrogator who could read their whatsapp messages and google searches dating back to 2021.

Without art or literature that draws out the terror I don't think most people can really envisage the danger we're all being put in. Without popular consciousness of the problem, it's all the more likely to happen.

Hunted, a Dutch TV series, is a reality show featuring exactly this kind of investigative resources. A lot of times, the players (the hunted) are tracked down because they used some form of communication that is compromised by the hunters.

We really should build more Nuclear.

Nuclear is the real clean energy.

zarq · 4 years ago
It's clean in the sense that it isn't generating CO2. But it is a finite resource. Also, the environmental impact of a nuclear power plant is non-negligible.
