Coders have this tendency to value ideology over practicality. What matters is something that works and people use, not a theoretical picture of how it could have worked in an alternative timeline.

What can we do to stop Google killing the open web other than complaining?

One way is to tell everyone to use Firefox (uBlock origin works there)

It is still an issue that the Mozilla Foundation is still 80% funded by Google though, so this needs to be solved first.

Somehow Firefox needs to be moved away from Mozilla if they cannot find an alternative funding source other than Google.

Firefox is used by 1% of users.

Not really. People started having issues with teeth when we switched to farming and went from a diverse diet to a pretty poor one (grain, grain, grain).

I'm pretty sure if Google agreed, they could come up with the money. Chrome is essentially the gateway to 90% of the world on the internet.

But here's the thing, nobody can monetize that space as effectively as Google, except maybe Meta.

It's the same sort of confusion many people have about Google paying Apple. It's not just for the default position, it's a revenue-share for the ads seen by Apple users on Google's properties. Nobody has the same potential.

I just searched within the (edit: iOS App Store) App Store app for

     ublock origin lite
    “ublock origin lite”
For the unquoted search, there are twelve different apps/items returned above it - you really have to scroll down to find it at number 13.

Even for the quoted search, it’s returned in fourth place.

More interestingly the second time I searched with quoted it’s in third place, and the third time of searching the sponsored items at the top is getting even more random.

This doesn't really make Apple look better, but a huge part of it is surely how recent the Ublock Origin app for iOS is. New apps take time to propagate and become good responses. Which makes sense, you wouldn't want someone else to be able to instantly cover Ublock Origin itself with a copycat app (not that it doesn't happen anyway).

Venture capital didn’t kill Arc. It gave us the chance to see what Arc could be. That’s more than most products ever get.
