xfiz commented on A free-as-in-freedom re-implementation of Google’s Android user space   microg.org/... · Posted by u/doener

I heard of this years ago when I had a OnePlus One and played with LineageOS.

What's the current status of the project? Is is a full functional replacement? Is it transparent to apps?

xfiz · 5 years ago
Partly. It mostly works well for the things I use it (push messages, maps, exposure notifications seem to work too). Some apps behave a bit weirdly if the try to access specific API's, like Google Pay. So it definitely isn't fully functional, but works well enough for many use cases. There is also a LineageOS+microG fork, which makes trying it out a lot easier.

The way it works is that it pretends to be Google Play Services, so it isn't transparent to the apps. Not sure if the apps could figure it out it isn't running on the real deal.

xfiz commented on Cease and desist for video on how to make “Grana Padano Style Cheese” [video]   m.youtube.com/watch?v=M_A... · Posted by u/notRobot

I think it's important to notice that the point is not to keep how to make the cheese secret. The recipe for the cheese is actually encoded in the law, and you can download it freely ( https://www.parmigianoreggiano.com/it/consorzio-disciplinare..., in italian). During lockdown I was trying to make a regional cheese, and the law was the best recipe I could find, with extremely detailed steps.

I think they are trying to discourage the usage of "something style" naming, as consumers associate the "something" with the knock off. I saw it a lot in recent years in the UK, even knowledgeable people end up buying "parmesan style" cheese and refer to it as parmesan, when the taste is not the same.

To protect the name in general, they might be going after every instance of the "style" usage, even if in this case it's clear there is no intention to trick, and probably no commercial incentive.

I'd be curious about a legal opinion, but as far as I understand it, the restrictions would only apply to actual commercial products. But he isn't actually selling the cheese as far as I know (only selling a video how to make the cheese).

The author should write a similar article about himself, because the whole article is filled with dubious claims and misguided evidence. The two main claims are "Since the GI is a measure of how much of a negative response your body has to certain sugars" and "research showing harms from canola oil". Neither can be ascertained. A big problem with nutritional science is that it's complex, therefore it is neigh impossible to discover the truth how specific foods really impact the body. I'm also of the opinion that the term "healthy" shouldn't be really used. Here I go with Paracelsus: "All things are poison, and nothing is without poison; the dosage alone makes it so a thing is not a poison." The author invites us to his newsletter "on getting healthy, wealthy, and wise." Yeah, it's all a baseless marketing ploy by, and for, the author.

I want to note, I'm making no argument that Oatly should be considered healthy though.

The FOSS movement in Germany always seemed to me a tiny bit more mainstream than the one in the US. Tech publications report more on Linux happenings (as opposed to the sometimes intense Apple focus of US tech publications).

Linux also has more market share in Germany than any other western country, I think.

xfiz · 5 years ago
According to statcounter, Germany has the highest usage of Firefox and fourth highest usage of Linux (behind Ireland, Greece and Luxembourg) among European and North American countries. Additionally, you have the Chaos Computer Club, which is somewhat prominent and could influence the thinking about FOSS.

The aversion to new facts is palpable. This is the top google hit to “wheat dietary inflammation”: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3705319/

But really, your problem is not that the GP did not cite their facts, you just don’t like the sound of their claims, so you’ll respond in a toxic way. I hardly expect the actual scientific literature to change your views.

xfiz · 8 years ago
Did you even read the study? They only say that it might be possible that there could be an effect on inflammation, but also stating that there haven't been good studies done on that subject. The problem is that nutritional studies are often very narrow, only for specific cases and the same applies for the results. However, those studies are often broadly generalized by ill-informed people. I'm no expert either, so I can't say if grains would be good or bad, it's just clear to be that neither can all the other people who claim to know so.

Huh, I'm surprised they could do it, ban EU-citizen while still allowing Ditch nationals. I thought they aren't allowed to do that within the EU.
